I remember being younger and being on a boat my dad used to own. A tiny little Shamrock. Unfortunately they went out of business. He then bought a used Wellcraft years later. Never spending a lot of money, sort of just having fun and ending up selling it.

I haven't been on one in years but I remember some popular brands like Grady White.

WOW. 500k+ for some of these boats. It honestly doesn't register.

I've talked to a few people about exotics and ownership and some've said "I'd never spend that much on one car, I'd buy a cheaper sports car, a boat and a motorcycle!".

I just cannot believe how expensive some of these are. 260K for a Wellcraft 340 coastal. Some would say "No, you'd actually spend more on the boat than the car! LOL

Is it just supply and demand?

Its fairly labor intensive to build a boat, even harder to do large volume. Takes a lot of time to get a boat from mold to fiber glass hull. Add in material costs, etc. Its expensive. Then add in you can only build so many per year. To be profitable they need to make good money per boat.

    This is a joke right?

You talk about a 34 foot boat as if it were a 17 foot runabout.

If serious, go visit the grady white factory. Then figure out how to do it for less.

Much much More than even that. Think volume, not length.

....."Gallons of diesel fuel: 20,000 gallons"..... in reference to a 140 ft. exploration-style yacht on the "Engine room" thread below.....

Multiply that 20,000 gallons by the cost of marine diesel at your local marina.....
Me thinks you're homing in on $100,000.00

Always remember Mr. Vanderbilts' comment along the lines of "....if you have to ask...."

My F31 trimaran cost a lot new because it has three hulls. That's why I always buy a used boat...

I'm paying $2 gallon delivered. Still a lot but not quite as bad. Fuel in remote parts of the Bahamas can still be >$4 gallon.

Nice Ed. I'm heading to Ft Myers after Cavallino to help deliver a 77' MY to Lauderdale.

My buddy had me on a 135' MY a few years ago. I was spoiled rotten.

Are Palmer Johnson yachts on the low end of pricing considering the size and amenities? Their 170 sport yacht DB9 is for sale for $25 million, which to me seems like a really good price considering 200 foot Oceancos go for way way more. I know Oceanco/Lurssen make incredible yachts, but the size difference isn't nearly as much as the price difference from PJ.

Believe me collecting cars is a piece of cake compared to yachting!

    Agreed.

I've owned and sold 4 racing sailboats. I made it a point never to add up the annual maintenance, crew and sail replacement costs. If I did so, it would have diminished the fun factor.

Now, it's more fun enjoying myself on other people's boats.
