i always felt scared and nervous when i put my foot down in my gto, whether its going straight or turning in corners. Always playing with the available tires, spacers, wheels, and offsets to arrive at what i want. and i finally got a combo im happy with :

Front 265/35/20 BS RE070 on stock rims which rub on u-turns, so i dont do much of that :)
Rear 335/30/20 PSS on stock rims and 1.5cm spacers.

I feel safe now when i just abruptly stump the throttle even on cold tires and my banzai drives are much more enjoyable, i always drive with the cst off, so atleast i feel im heading in the right direction when im doing stupid zhn!t with this set-up :

Looks like an interesting setup. #1 problem with my GTO is traction (actually the sole legit issue). Still can't help but thinking that part of the "charm" and extraordinary challenge with the GTO is finding traction when on the pipe in the upper part of the rev band. Sometimes the GTO reminds me of my old Husky dirt bike - always in the upper part of the power band and tires spinning through every gear. The Husky was awesome fun and so is the GTO. My only comment is that the best dirt bike riders would fly around with wheels spinning nonstop and the race car drivers seem to drive on the edge also.

well i got tired of tip toeing around and i think the car atleast requires a 335 rear set to make much use of the wild wheel spin, next time i'll go with a 21" wheel and 355s, im sure i'll keep going straight with those and not spin hopelessly but looking awesome standing still. And u never know which direction u be going once the tires finally caught on, too exciting for me.

John- If there's one guy that probably tried every wheel & tire combination that the average guy would think of, I'd bet on you

But I can't help but imagine that two different tire brands/models on the same car is not a safe recipe normally-

How did you arrive at this set-up?

Very simple really, I bought a bunch of the front re070s and have 4 new 335 PSS for my CGT, so I put them on. voila ! Best combo ever! To be honest, the new cup 2s might be better but they don't have the sizes I'm after. Mixing different front and back was never an issue for me, i do that quite often :)

Doesn't the stock set-up use 275's up front? -indeed wider than yours

You couldn't find a tire that offered both front & rear sizes to satisfy?

And I'm very partial to Michelin's ever since the PS2 made its way to the head of the class- Did you try any of their tire offerings?

Stock PSS is 285s, but the re070 is wider or the same at 265, different brand and an almost track tire does that to u.

Only other tire better is Michelin Cup2s, give that a try and u'll know its the best, just don't let the price faze u. I love Michelin cup2s, but go price a re070 and u will understand.

Yes, I've read PSC2's are much better than even MPSS's which are already Great

But not a Great idea for street if you encounter wet roads sometimes- I'd like to try them anyways a some point

I can't wait to own my own GTO to chime in on these discussions. It's these sort of threads of GTO owners that make fchat so special.

    johns930,

I will likely get fresh rubber in the late spring for my GTO. Assuming I do not want to go with the OEM MPSS, what would you recommend in OEM sizes ? I do not want a bigger tire that will strike the wheel well (ie. 21's) and do not want to change the profile (ie. less rubber or wider/narrower). Are there MP Cup 2 tires made that fit the GTO in the factory spec ? Agree that Cup 2 tires are way to go vs. older tech OEM MPSS BUT again I really don't want to change the cars handling "dynamics" although more traction is really needed. Have you figured out a Cup 2 tire configuration for all 4 wheels that will be stock OEM size (or very close to it) but also give us that much sought after traction when on the pipe in the meat of the powerband ? I have at least 4 months until I need fresh rubber (we are now in full Winter mode here in NY) so we have time to figure this out. Even though its now sub-freezing in NY I can't help but want to take the beast out to play for a few miles while she rides on ice skates. Yeah I know its crazy but a lot of fun.

A lil cold for anything to stick nowadays in NY, but according to John, the Cup 2's are the way to go if you don't mind the price

John has personally tried lots of wheels & tires on his cars, so he'd be a Good guy to ask

He likes the Cup 2's according to what he's said above, he just doesn't like the price, but I think price is secondary if it's the right tire for the job- Just my 2 cents...

1st off the 599 or gto don't like the wet or the cold so dont do that if u like ur car.
2nd a probably set uped 21 or even a 22" rim by ur local HRE or whatever wheel dealer will never make u rub, like I did to the aperta :

As a new set for tires, I think cup2s make the stock sizes now, cup2s all the way.
PSS are ok if not great. Funny, contrary to what others are saying, my cup2 experience in the wet is better than the PSS, but don't try this at home. Just don't have fun too much in the wet.

    So true.
And I chew thru a rear set of PSS in 4k miles easy, so I need to watch it.

After a year and a half of ownership and a 1000+ miles of seat time I concur 100% on the wet/cold lack of traction with the stock MPSS rubber. Candidly the GTO can be a downright incredibly scary beast at my skill level on the wet/cold street (and this is coming from a guy whose DD is a 997.2 TTS Cab). As far as bigger non-stock rims its a non-starter for me as I love the look of the OEM wheels. I'll stick with my stock OEM rims and see what Cup2's tire sizes are available for the GTO over the next few months. Thanks.
