This morning, I was continuing to peruse last month's issue of Classic & Sports Car, when I noticed that Justin Banks was selling this one off his own personal collection. The car has been mentioned in this forum before, and by Justin no less, who made reference to it under his first and only post ever a little over 6 months ago when he first must have acquired it.

Here is the link to the advertisement:

Here is the description from Justin's listing on his website:
    __________________________________________________________________________

This is a car from my personal collection. It is a 1979 Ferrari 400GT Manual, one of only 28 made, making this one of the rarest Ferraris of them all! It is finished in its original colours of Rosso Nearco with Tan leather with Rosso inserts. It has a huge service history including original sales invoices etc and has just had a large service and a new clutch fitted at a Ferrari Specialist, In fact just over £3k was spent last month on the car and it drives perfectly and is ready for regular use. These large 4 seat manuall cars are a completely different beast to their Automatic cousins and provide a different experience altogether!

Launched at the 1976 Paris Salon, the 400GT re-affirmed Ferrari’s determination to compete with the world’s finest luxury saloons and was intended to attract the type of mature yet discerning customer who previously might have opted for a Bentley or Mercedes-Benz, a requirement that made the option of automatic transmission a necessity. Sadly, this splendidly equipped 2+2’s biggest potential market - the USA - remained effectively closed to it because of the latter’s stringent safety and emissions legislation. Even after its 4.8-litre V12 received fuel injection in 1979, the model - now the 400i - remained effectively a Europe-only car. By the time production of the ‘412’ derivative ceased in 1989, Ferrari’s finest 2+2 had been in production for a remarkable 17 years, though its exclusivity meant that there were seldom more than 200 sold in any one year.

The vast majority of 400GTs was built with automatic transmission, which makes this five-speed, manual transmission, right-hand drive example - of just 28 such produced - something of a rarity and all the more desirable. The vehicle is presented in superb condition throughout, having been kept up and running regardless of cost at all the best specialists.

Built to the ultimate UK specification, this magnificent Ferrari Gran Turismo is offered with all books and tools, a great history, in a very rare colour, and at a price which belies the rarity of the car, try and find another in the current market!

    __________________________________________________________________________

This one appears to in fact, be somewhat rare with only 28 examples made of its type, and I do believe that the asking price is more in line with the market than the one for sale in France that I posted yesterday for 2.5 times more!

PS - I don't have the smarts to post pictures from the listing but certain one of you can/will!

Nah, why would we want to do that? Liking old sports cars and particularly Ferraris is a disease for which fortunately there is no cure! ;)

Wow, look at those red door panel inserts. What do you think the chances are those were factory installed?

This is how it should look...

No "400" badge on the 400GT (manual).

This one is for sale at Foskers - £60,000, but only 19,000 miles and "time warp" original.

Both are good value in my opinion.

The part number for a 5-speed 400 rear badge is 255-44-641-06.

Well we can argue about it all day long if you'd like but I think I'll stick with the experts at Ferrari who listed a rear emblem for a 400GT in their parts manual. :D

John, life has a way of curing this disease all by itself.

It's called "running out of money".

And I'm getting close to almost nearly kind of being cured very soon. Well, sort of.....

Justin's car is exactly may car's original color and I never could find the name of the color, now I know. My car was repainted a very close match but painter removed the code stamp from the trunk to be sure someone would not try to match it. Finally I know.

Then Ferrari must have changed that nr. over the years. 255-44-641-06 is listed as a moulding, the lower one on the edge of sill.

I would love a "400GT" bagde as pictured on the owners manual if I only could find one or if it even exist.

It is possible that Ferrari considered producing a 400GT badge in the style of the owner's manual - but they didn't do it.

Back in the old days ANYTHING was possible with Ferrari. Some of the things those of us who have been around a while have seen would just make you laugh and shake your head.

    Hi Ken

I hope you are fine and your car too
Justin's car is supposed to be in its original Rosso Nearco (Italver)
Your car should have been painted by a Glasurit Paint, Rosso Corsa or Prugna if in a sort of red originally

I thought Ferrari had produced engines, and not plastic badges
The subject is interesting, would you be able to find badges for sale or some others 400 with this badge ? I doubt, but I m open minded
