Looked at the video that Ferrari did. Sure looks like there was post-entry design development. If true, that is just flat freaking wrong and an embarrassment for "the competition".

FL as second place? They passing around the crack pipe while voting? Go get some real professionals with a clue. Every one of those so-called judges should hold their head in shame.

 

Duo was robbed! Best design by far.

Speaking of which:

Would love to hear more on it as soon as you get clearance.

Well... I hope you won't be sorry you asked.

Which Ferraris inspired them and what aspects/features/details of them did they most try to evolve into their design? Was there a Ferrari inspiration and a "futuristic inspiration" that, when amalgamated, gave them something like the starting point for developing Duo?

How did they come up with the whole dual cockpit idea? Was there an aerodynamic advantage or purpose to the channel created in between the two roof bubbles - was it focusing air to an engine intake?

What does the interior look like? Are the occupants sealed off from one another and communicating via intercom or is it a low roofline in the middle with one connected cockpit?

It doesn't look like there are any gaps/joins/sections on the glass, so what happened to that when folks were opening the doors to get in and out?

In their presentation wall/poster, they mentioned issues of congestion, so what did they envisage any new powertrain for Duo or ways Duo would be a solution to that?

It really is an awesome design. I've quite the affinity for it.

Well, as far as I know, this particular "Italian design" was done by Tom Tjaarda of Detroit , who also did my 330 S1 and the original Fiat 124 Spyder, traces of which can be seen in the Corvette pictured here.

BTW, I agree with you on that Vauxhall show car. Vauxhall did quite a few really good show cars around that time.
Was Wayne Cherry in charge at that time?

With the heart as their inspiration, no wonder it has a natural appeal to someone with a biology PhD - they obviously did a good job with it too!

I have also anyways thought celebration of the engine is core to the Ferrari brand so, in my opinion, they definitely approached that in the right way too.

For egress/ingress, did you explore the idea to have the whole glass area as one articulated section, perhaps hinged at the front? When the side door opens, a powered system could open the roof, thus providing a way to avoid cutlines disturbing the roof shape. Perhaps a combination of this (pictured) and conventional doors.

How was the windscreen to be kept clear of road dirt and rain? That shape looks very difficult for windscreen wipers to deal with.

Were Vauxhall and Opel separate then?

 

There was also the Opel CD show car around 1970 that did a pivoting upper. In the Style Auto article a different opening was part of the design focus.
