I'm participating in the restoration by personally sourcing all parts needed, all small cosmetic replacement items required, and I'm supervising every aspect of the project.

To help things along, I take all the delicate cosmetic items home and refurbish them myself.

    For example, the car's lights.

This past week I disassembled and refurbished the tail-lights. I cleaned the backing, made sure all the connections were good, secured the wiring with new electrical tape, polished the reflective tin face, etc. The most difficult part was hand-polishing the plexiglass. 30 years of silt, dist, grime and scratches are no more.

And the best part is my wife has the kitchen table back!

I mentioned earlier that we'll be using a sport exhaust, with free-flow SS headers.

I have found the standard sports exhausts that you can buy to be a bit sub-standard in a number of ways. Accordingly, I wanted to produce a system that eliminated crooked tubing, ugly seam-welding, non-original polished finish, and, produce a better sound.

During the course of the project, Paul Goddard of Quicksilver uttered these now-immortal words to me:

"As a thoughtful manufacturer 'perfect' is not a word that easily leaves my lips but we know what you require..."

The net result of a lot of back-and forth and a sacrificed prototype, was an exhaust system that featured:

    - Perfected Mandrel bends with each bent section in one bend, causing bend radii of the 2 pipes between the muffler & tips to be as concentric as possible, and properly parallel trajectory of the muffler tubes and pipes heading in the same direction

    - 'Hollowed' silencers, free-flow mufflers with perforated tube-only internals

    - All welds of tube-joins & brackets filed to provide a smoothed exterior finish with seamless muffler tubes

    - Exhaust tips filed to provide a smooth & precise finish eliminating the jagged-edge tips of both Ansa & Quicksilver units previously manufactured

    - Exhaust tips polished, but muffler-tubes and pipes brush-finished to provide an excellent adhesion-base for subsequent coating

This system will be used in concert with a set of SS free-flow headers, and together with the connector pipes and exhaust unit, everything except the polished tips will be Ceramic Coated in satin-black wrinkle (after mock-fitting and adjusting the unit) period-correct for 1986.

Paul must have really liked the results as he staged an impromptu studio shoot before he shipped the unit to me.

Perefct and professional pics Joe, thank you for posting!
I would be very happy if you would post some more pics from the engine compartment and the trunk area. It would be very helpfull to see how the plumbing of the oil system and the wiring loom is attached to the chassis.

Fantastic job and great pictures Joe, hard to top!
Exactly what I wanted to build for my cars. If fully agree about the ugly finish (low finish quality of welding and poor geometrical design) of the SS systems currently on the market. Thank you for posting!

Eric , did you get your car crom Lasse Jönnson bil i Karlstad, i was very close to trade a red with white 86dd wing less car on my 328Ferrari back in 1988,89 , Drove the car around in the erea , lots of fun, Lasse was the Countach guy in Sweden at the time, not the importer but the guy who actually sold cars (porsche dealer) also a great guy, probably not the same car but still interesting,

GLA12997 had already SS Header from Quicksilver because the originals broke in 2014.
    Lamborghini Countach #GLA12997 Manifold replacement

Additionally it had a SS muffler with identical measure like the original, but inside only 2 free flow 100 cell catalysts, with this setup it made 98db at 4500rpm.
I had it done 2002: Lamborghini Countach #GLA12997 Exhaust
The 100 cells from 2002 were replaced 2015 with 200 cells from HJS which can withstand 700bhp.

I personally do not like the Ansa Style F1 exhaust, it's much too loud.
Since GLA12997 never had an Ansa exhaust it's not like it came from the factory.

What I installed was a Thermostat of Mocal for the second oil cooler, since at low temperature the oil would never get warm with two radiators.

I will certainly do that in due course.

When we get to the re-assembly stage, we will photo-document every aspect of the build.

My wife (who is a photographer) will be publishing a book on the restoration, and I will share all the images here.

Generally the exhausts out there are terrible, I had planned to create a better (Super Sport) version for years, and this restoration was finally a good reason.

The headers & exhaust will be refinished in satin black to be correct-for-period (see below for illustrative purposes only).

The only thing shiny on the exhaust from the period was the tips.

However, we must wait until the build phase when the mock-up and all adjustment's are completed to do this.

Well, you'll need to brace yourself for the sound of this system, it will be, as Vale likes to say, "Basso Supremo".
