I used to know somebody (a exotic car dealer in NY area) who had a '79 in that color with brown interior, no passenger mirror and specially ordered rims painted to match the color of the car. It was really nice in person.

Sloan's site lists it as "passenger side mirror was installed by previous owner." Do you remember if the car you viewed was a non-sunroof? Perhaps this is the same 930 with black center Fuchs.

It is an awesome color and appears to have the indicated low-mileage based on the condition of the sport seats. Sloan must have fitted the missing snorkel headlight washer prior to the episode.

Jerry is a longtime fan of the 930 Turbo - several Seinfeld episodes featured the rocket scientist flying turbo poster.

I believe the mileage is currently higher in the Sloan ad, snorkel may have been broken as there is nothing but 2 open holes in the bumper where it originally was.

Love that poster. anyone know where I can get one?

The car that I viewed had brown standard seats. I cant remember if it had a sunroof. I remember thinking how cool it looked without the passenger mirror and special ordered factory painted rims to match the car. It had a 150 speedo and snorkels. It did leave an impression on me between the color, smell of a 930 that has just been run and smell of a Porsche interior:) It was one of those cars that I am sure all of us have had that got away and you regret it later...

Hey Bud I have the poster and the subsequent advertisiment. I believe the poster is out of print but the add can me found in Motor Trend's Oct 1988 issue. The cover is a vette Zr1. Both adorn my office, an absolute classic. Agreed the sport seats on that beige '79 look outstanding especially for the mileage and them being light in color. Nice car, I really like off colored single stage paints of that era.

    Tony,
Thanks for posting the picture of the "flying Porsche" ad. The text is one of the finest ever written for Porsche and gives a great feeling for the 3.3 930 and it's character.

I spoke to Mr. Sloane less than two weeks ago, and the ask for the cars and coffee 930was quoted at $250K. Maybe there is a $45K premium now that Jerry has driven it?

In December when I was getting my 79 930 appraised I reached out to Mr Sloan to see what he was asking for the 4 79s he had at time on his website and in the PCA mag. he said that one was $295. maybe the owner now wants it gone before the auctions hit (maybe we are in bubble considering the global economy)?

    Per Mr Sloan:

1979 911 Turbo coupe black on black leather 10,113 miles $325,000
1979 911 Turbo Coupe summer yellow on black leather 14,994 miles $300,000
1979 911 Turbo Coupe moonstone lilac on brown leather 41,877 $275,000
1979 911 Turbo Coupe cashmere beige on cork 35,575 miles $295,000

    CharlesE,

Yes, that was the first price he quoted me also on the cashmere 930. But he called me back and told me he had the price confused with the '77 930 with 12k miles that he had in stock, and the cashmere was actually $250k. The car was out with Jerry when we spoke. Oh well, I think $250K is too high. But I wished him luck with the sale. I'm sure someone will buy it, especially now that it's famous.

why would you say that? do you know Richard? I do and he simply has some of the best examples on the planet. he knows these cars. he knows the market as well. he will never be caught talking the market down so that may where people don't see eye to eye with him?

If you think the ask price is too high, what do you think he actual value/sales price should be? not trying to challenge your opinion but to get more info/more opinions as I would now like to sell my 79.

    Hi CharlesE,

I'm definitely no expert, so I should be a little more careful with my words. I would love that car, but $250K is to high for me - is what I should have said. I have read the forums, and have spoken to a few "insiders" who's opinion I respect, and I think the consensus is that Sloan's prices tend to be ahead of the market. But the market is the market, and these cars are worth what someone is willing to pay. I say his prices are ahead of the market because his inventory doesn't turn often, but I don't think Sloan minds waiting for the market to catch up given the nice cars that he has. I don't know, maybe he makes good deals on the cars he does sell - didn't really try negotiating when I spoke to him.

Given what I've seen on these forums, valuations on nice condition '79 930s seem to be in the $180k-$200k range.

Exactly, Sloan could care less about selling, he doesn't need to so he puts crazy prices on them and waits and waits and waits for someone who just 'has to have it'. He is always way ahead of the market. In my experience with him he made claims about a car that where not true. I proved them false and he would not except it. He is always right even if he's wrong, he doesn't care. I will never deal with him again.

Anyone have confirmed '79 930s selling in the $180-200 range??? That seems way high .... but I could be wrong.

    A quick look on Hemming site shows 5 '79 930's for sale with asking prices of $70K, $76.5K, $100.5K, $105K, and $140K.

    TKO,

The valuation that I gave are for a couple of low milage (less than 30K miles, all original) examples that I have located. I have seen a few for less, but not in excellent condition. Prices do seem to have a wide range, and definitely lower than Sloan.

FWIW, when I spoke to Sloan, he told me the cashmere 930 was all original. I challenged him on the passenger side mirror and the radio, and he agreed with me. He said he has a lot of cars and it's hard remembering everything, which is understandable. The two unoriginal items I brought up are hardly deal killers in my opinion. Sorry you had a bad experience with him. He was a nice guy to me.

So unless you are standing right in front a car I think it's hard to put a good valuation estimate together, the small details can make a big difference in valuation. According to SCM - the high sale for a 78-85 last year at an auction was $315k, $300k 79's need to be 100 % original and in excellent condition, very few are. Also if are going to believe low mileage claims you better get a lot of documentation and check the date stamp of speedo, many get swapped, repaired etc etc. I sold a pretty damn nice 79 last year for well under $100k, don't believe the valuations that Hagerty posts. A really nice 79 just sold on pelican for $120k - was on the market for less than a day- it was priced under market

I've definitely seen 79s trade for that and much more. All depends on originality, condition, color, etc.

Modded 78 930 did $80,000 at Mecum. Disappointing result in my mind.

Holy crap, I hope it has less than 10K miles or was owned by the Pope.
