That looks good for a quick eat! Tonight is dinner and movie night. Going to try the bistro's shrimp Po Boy and poutine.
Retro night. Mac and cheese with ground beef, AKA homemade hamburger helper. Had to be fancy though! Organic pasta (don't ask, no idea what inorganic pasta is! It was free with a coupon at Kroger!), melted cheddar, a bit of cream, browned up some grass fed ground beef. Mixy mix. Voila! T
This'll sound snobby, but yuck on Wal-Mart. Their stores always seem shabby to me. That being said, they can't be beat on Bustelo coffee prices! Kroger is my choice for food staples. Costco for meat and things that don't go bad like detergent, dish soap, etc. and wine. Central Market for splurge items. I've not run into anything better than Central Market for selection. It's a Top 10 Reason for living in Tejas! T
Not the greatest. But compared to the other stores here, its upscale. A little nicer here compared to the American stores.
When I was much younger I practically lived on boxed mac & cheeze with hamburger. One of my favorite comfort foods. If I make it now I try to class it up a little too and at least get the Velveeta shells and cheeze. We have Central Market up here too. Not sure if they're the same but ours our upscale. the closest one to me though is about 20 miles away so I only make it up there occasionally. And they have an amazing beer and wine department so I generally end up spending too much money. But my wine fridge is getting awfully low these days so a trip up might be in order. I want to try some of those Costco ones too though now that you've said they are decent. Oh, and it's the only place I know of close to me that carries Serrano ham..mmmm.
Velveeta and shells? Man, that's high falutin'!! 😀 I think it was a recent thread on comfort foods here that put the right in my head. Our Central Markets are the top end brand in HEB family of stores. HEB is Texas based grocery chain, but apart from CM hard to find HEBs north of Austin...T
A heads up regarding Velveeta shells and cheese, you can now purchase the cheese sauce separately for that extra cheesy punch.
Skipped the movie. Seen 13 Hours and Star Wars, the other choices just didn't seem interesting. Trying to think of homemade comfort food. Most of mine come from restaurants.
Mac & cheese w/ some ground beef - super easy and tasty - that'd be my recommendation. Other comfort foods like meatloaf and mashed potatoes are a bit of work. What about grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of hot soup? Tonight, it's likely going to be fish burgers, plus whatever I can think of to make a dent in the 5 lbs of carrots the wife bought at Costco! T
Grilled cheese and tomato soup is one of my earliest food memories. Used to come home from kindergarten and have lunch with my Mom and had this almost every day it seemed like. Still a favorite although grilled cheese is one of those things I've upscaled since youth also. I add parmesan to the outside and use a couple good cheeses inside.
I'll try mac n cheese with hamburger tonight. Weird thing growing up my mom wasn't into cooking or even baking. Now that my brothers and I, are long out of the house. She not only cooks but collects cook books. Think she tries and shares recipes on FB.
Following along with the retro memories of favorites is my grandmothers fried chicken, mac n cheese and sweet tea. Had to hit the barn, catch the chicken - ring its neck - pluck it - gut it and then wait for the magic of that iron skillet.
She may have been too busy raising you youngsters! My mom cooked most weekday nights, but not involved. Too tired from work I suspect, and not a lot of $. Almost invariably, a simple salad - iceberg lettuce with lemon and oil, S&P. Pasta most nights. Veggies from a can. Once a month, something like London broil. We hardly ever ate out. Usually on mom's birthday. Twice a week we ate at grandma's house, from who I gained my interest in cooking. Wife was similar growing up. So, we like to try and make dinner a little special nowadays even though we both work...T
You know the only thing nearly as good as fried chicken straight from the skillet? Cold fried chicken from the fridge the next day!! T
My Mother was mostly shopping with her friends. A lot of it was quilt stores, and buying fabric to make them.
Went Mad Food Scientist tonight! Had white fish from Costco in the freezer, think it was haddock. Maybe hake. Steamed it. Steamed carrots. Sweated an onion. Had white beans in fridge that were already cooked. Chopped all these as fine as I could. Added a handful of breadcrumbs, an egg, horseradish, salt, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic, parmesan cheese. Mixed it all up. Formed into patties. Cooked them up like burgers in a frying pan with some olive oil. Served on a whole wheat bun. So, reasonably healthy with a side of steamed carrots. Taste was good, especially with all that horseradish. Of course not as good as A beef burger. A little habanero Tabasco helped though. The texture was kind of bleh, sort of like some veggie burgers, but I kind of expected that. T
I followed this recipe for hamburger "helper" last night Easy Homemade Hamburger Helper - The Recipe Rebel it was good, but I'll look for a better recipe. Too much left over!
Too much left over from quantity or quality? When we (Us as a whole) cook we often over season with out remembering you can add more but you cannot take out what was already added....thin ice.
Cooking is an experiment, appeasing every pallet is a fruitless venture. I normally reply "well if you think you could have done better why did YOU not make the effort, give me that damn plate and don't yell at me when your hungry...get delivery!"
Lunch was better. I'll work it out latter. Went to deli/bakery, they had deli meats priced extremely low, like roast beef was 99 cents per 100g's, most stores its $2.00 per. Without doing the math that's under $4 per pound and in CDN dollars. Anyway, decided to get baguette type buns. Make beef dip and have the hamburger helper as a side.
Yikes. That's outrageous good deal on roast beef. I hope you sniffed it to make sure it was still good before buying. Tonight, home made pizza! Pillsbury thin crust pizza dough are an outrageous good deal ($2 a pop) and not too bad when there isn't enough time to make dough from scratch. Used this recipe. Fontina-pancetta-caramelized onion pizza! Crazy good. http://www.myrecipes.com/m/recipe/fontina-caramelized-onion-pancetta-pizza With bubbly. Oh, if only grandma were alive to see all this high falutin' grub! T
Yes, made sure it was good. The store is closing at the end of month. Just found that out this morning. Headed to American Costco this afternoon. Its usually a crazy zoo. Its one of the busiest Costco stores in the U.S. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyCZTVapOnM Old video but its still pretty much the same now even with the lousy exchange rates. To be fair some in the video maybe have Canadian immigration status and visiting the U.S. on a visitors visa. Like my SIL is Chinese and has Chinese citizenship. She has a visitors visa good for 2 years to go back and fourth to the U.S. And are not actually Canadians. Video makes Canadians look bad unfairly. Here in BC, its typical for South Asians to buy large homes with several families. So they tend to buy a lot of milk for their 10 or more people households.
