Hello Friends! I am looking for your view and advice. I am interested to buy a 512 TR, which is fitted with a TUBI sports exhaust. I have never heard of TUBI before. Could you tell me what you think about the exhaust and how does it compare to the regular fitted version. I personally like my cars to have all a factory spec. Thank you in advance.
I wouldn't not buy a car just because it had an aftermarket exhaust, there are a lot of reasons to pass on a car the Tubi is not one of them. The advantages of an aftermarket exhaust are- less weight at the very back of the car, less heat, more free flowing exhaust that might lead to more power and it changes the sound to make it sound more aggressive. This usually also means that it sounds louder which most people like. If it's a good car buy it, you can always change the exhaust later, even going back to stock. My guess is that you'll keep the Tubi and start to think about deleting the cats and then the precats; it's a slippery slope.
Thank you. I think the car is a very good sample and I would not not buy it because of the exhaust. As you said, you can always go back to the original. I just wanted to find out if this type of exhaust is common or if owners prefer the factory fitted one.
Many folks, hate to say most as my sample size is limited, have changed out the stock exhaust for one of the aftermarket products, especially people on this board. It was the first thing I did.
picked up my 86 tr oct. 2015. it was in the hands of paul newman nov 2015 and first thing requested was to change out the stock exhaust for a LOUDER one. my 70's cars with smaller engines sound better. with a 360-180 degree flat V12, the sound was disappointing for such a pedigree. my specs were that should the better half fnsist on being with me in the car, i would not need a reason to ignore her based on the legitimate basis that i would not be able to hear her. paul ordered a tubi. so yes, common. learn to live with it and enjoy it.
The Tubi on a 512TR is still a very quiet exhaust. I have a goal of getting a Fuchs exhaust. YouTube videos about both types show the Fuchs has more of a 1970's 512M sound.
Like pretty much anything else in the Ferrari world, there is no wrong. Just different shades of great. Recently I had the good fortune of comparing - back to back - two identical 1994 512 TRs. One with a stock exhaust, one with a Tubi exhaust. In the parking lot, the Tubi is louder, and hence (much more) exciting - it sounds like a Ferrari, even at a stop light. In comparison, the stock exhaust is the exact opposite - unobtrusive and quite franky a bit flat - not what you associate with a Ferrari. I suspect this is the reason why after-market exhausts like Tubi are so common on modern era Ferraris. However, at speed, and especially post 5,000 RPM, the 512 TR engine makes a sound that is so exciting, I have heard it referred to as the "Voice of God" (really, there is a thread here somewhere with that reference). It is everything you expect a Ferrari to be - not just exciting: euphoric. It almost sounds like a vintage Ferrari with carbs. You can feel it gulpping the air in 3D. Really, it is that good, and only audible with the stock exhaust. At the same RPM, the Tubi car simply drowns the Voice of God. You think its great, but you don't know what you are missing. Incidentally, the two cars now both have stock exhausts...
Also: If you get the chance, listen to a 512TR with no cats or pre-cats and a Tubi. Intoxicating. I just today returned from a 4 hour tip in my 1994 512TR with 57,000+ miles and I did not turn on the stereo once. It was 60 degrees F and I had the windows down the whole way. Perfect roads, a cool day, bright blue sky. This is why these cars were created - to drive. My face hurts from grinning for 4 hours.
today I just arrived in thailand again and can not upload the sound of my competition. but this sound is a mixture between "sound of god" - "sinfony for the devil" - "orchester for 12 x 4 musicians" and "the pure sound of power"
You have converters and pre-cats? A 94 I put a tubi on just had precats and it has a great sound. Another got an x-ost with no precats or converters and it wails. I have a 91 here with a tubi, again no precats or converters and an 86 same deal. Haven't heard those two yet but I suspect I wont want them any louder.
my job is my hobby and also my business - so holiday mood every day and during work get payed for there is nothing better
