Bought a used OEM for our project and Jim (ivolicity) was really helpful in the process. Original exploded in fire. With a bit of sincere effort we found the best local glass guy to "pop" ours in. Mind u, not sure any current glass guys ever did a 308 rear window. And this guy was mildly freaked out:). It was about that far off and he worked it carefully... And it was bending (yes glass was really bending) to the point I almost grabbed a beer! It snapped into place vs shattering and I was certain it was gonna shatter!! Im not a glass guy but was impressed. Not a job for me but Jim or one of the other guys who has great insight should know if its close enough to "pop" in. Cool to have the glass back vs alternatives!

I noticed that on mine when I first attempted to put it back in myself. Although I don't remember it being off by that much. I didn't try long and took it to a shop my local independent suggested. They got it in. Remember it's got a decent sized gasket too.

Just finished a few months ago replacing my back glass in my 82 when I had the interior completely redone. My suggestion would be to put the rubber seal back around the glass, Secure it in place with a couple pieces of masking tape here and there then take a Carpenters string line and run at least two courses of string completely around inside the rubber channel having it exit the rubber about in the center of the glass. Take some dish soap on a rag and run the dish soap around the inside of the rubber window seal and try to install in car. Any glass shop will know this. And see what you come up with. Pretty hard to measure fit without the rubber and glass in place. I Don't think your car has been damaged it's just kind of a crazy glass to install. :) Oh, and start glass from corner and work to the other, It takes a bit of time but should fit. Be careful when you're pulling the string from the inside to set the rubber, if you pull too hard the string will tear the corners of the rubber where it seals in each corner of the car. < slow and steady >

You have to flex the glass to pop it in....it takes gonads.

    Good luck!

I would not hand it to someone that did not know the "rope installation" m,ethod. which is described above with string.

That is how it is done.

slight complication, it is an early car, 1977, and doesn't have the rubber seal...shop says it was urethaned in place with an aluminum trim strip around it.

Doesn't sound right. The front glass was done that way.

    No, that is correct.
I have a '77 as well and it is a glue-in with aluminum trim.

Just went back and looked at your photos. There is no way that that rear glass is urethaned in place. Impossible. Needs the rubber boot. Prepared to eat crow..

We need Rifledriver to weigh in here.
If they say it had a trim strip around it to begin with I'm going to bet it was an inset into the rubber boot to help spread and tighten a seal that may have been used on earlier cars.

76 and 77 rear window is held in with butle with aluminum trim similar to the windshield trim. 78 up was a rubber gasket.

^^ this gentleman would know. Paul if that's the case, do you have to order a year specific rear glass? After posting I did a search and looked through 270 threads on the subject but none mentioned anything other then the rubber seal. Thanks for the clarification.

Crow... Taste just like chicken! :)

Part number for the glass is different for butle vs rubber gasket application so the shape may have changed.

Ricambi is where I checked and it had different numbers 76 vs QV and I can't see a QV being different than a 79 for example. Regardless 77 wasn't rubber mounted.

thanks for the replies. I will admit that over the years I have eaten as much crow as chicken :) this window probably is the original window, and I could believe that the body variances are that much, but I will defer to experienced voices. At this point the shop is trying to track down glass that matches the frame but haven't been successful.

Sometimes the Rubber Surround Molding has a groove in it. The metal Trim fits into the groove to add tension. Does the picture look like Rubber Molding with a Metal Trim insert, or am I completely up a tree?
