It was a half an inch in places. The quarters had been patched but it was like the metal was just a platform for the filler. Didn't matter where they put the metal or how straight it was because they just built it up.

The first pic shows the rust spots I mentioned earlier that we're just uncovering as we remove material. Safe to say we'll find more and now is the time to look. Those spots were as a result of the previous repairs or at least connected to it whether it was left bare for too long or the 4 year storage in primer did it.

The first layer of material is fiberglass filler then bondo. The right side had the fiberglass / bondo combo and the left side was straight bondo.

This type of thing just makes me not trust anyone except you and maybe 3 other people on this planet if I have to paint something.

The new work is as impressive as the old work was pitiful. Given my experiences I should perhaps not be surprised but it is shocking to see such poor workmanship.

I tend to agree with you but over the years I have learned a bunch of lessons on this and one common thing rings out as the biggest warning light that the guy you are dealing with is not likely to deliver on your expectations.

Without fail the guys who over tout their work, trash talk everyone else as being a butcher, and struggle to find praise in the work of others CANNOT DELIVER TOP LEVEL WORK regardless of how much you pay or how long you wait. This rule has held true for body shops, mechanics, upholsterers, chrome guys, home contractors, you name it.

Conversely the REAL pros like RM, Motion Products, Paul Russell, and others who have dozens of Pebble Beach Best in Shows, class wins, and who are the go to guys by the best car collectors in the world are all humble, gracious, and without a hint of ego. Ironic how the guys who would have the most to brag about do the least of it.

    Spot on.

Mechanics are the curse of Ferrari ownership.

...but find a good one, and count your blessings.

I actually never road in it, only sat in it when I was 13 and took some pictures. It drove past my house one day and chased after it. Turned out to be a small world because the son of the man driving it and I had gone to daycare together when we were little and we remembered each other. (I was 13 so daycare/after school was not very far into in my past at that point in life). He is a patient now and has been keeping up with this story and sharing it with his dad. Ferrari Market Letter did a cover story on it last Jan 2015 as well.

Here are two links that will fill in the rest of my history and that 308.

A rubber lip seal on the bottom of the door, early cars.

I don't see any foam there.

Mounts pretty close to the weep hole slots actually...:D

Thanks for the links! Cool to see those period pics.

I see the rear filler panel above the muffler went missing long ago. It now has the deep spoiler rather than what it had originally. I prefer the standard spoiler myself because the car looks balanced, nothing stands out more than any other detail, nothing over-powering or drawing your eye to it specifically. Whereas the deep spoiler is like a snow plough and appears to hang lower than the rocker even if it doesn't, looks nose heavy.

I have been looking at those pictures for 35 years and I never noticed that before.

Also, are you going to put the passenger mirror back on like in these pictures?

    No passenger mirror this time.

I wondered why Vinti had a panel made and now I know.

Estimating Ill have the shell back in April then I can start putting parts back on it. Interior is at the upholsterer. Pistons are out of the engine now, liners and crank next. Shocks done, springs and arms were already done earlier. Need to go through the hardware to see whats missing, im concerned with the amount things Im not seeing. Ill have a better idea once I have the body back. Ill continue to update the thread.

It's to be a good summer here this year, would be great for him to get it on the road and enjoy it this summer since its been parked for almost 10 yrs....he must be excited !

Just make sure when you give him the car back, you take away his power tools at home so he doesn't make the car a gts :p

At some point, the centre filler piece was added back. In post 53, 2nd picture, you can just make out the filler piece. This was during the Windsor residency. As far as I can make out, the next owner (Toronto) had the exhaust replaced with the X-OST, and at that time the filler piece was replaced with a home made one made out of stainless steel. I had the prior shop replace that with what was supposed to have been a more original fabrication.

Adjustable shocks but in the end we brought it up a bit because that front spoiler was limiting where the car could go...such as gas stations! If it had the standard spoiler it wouldn't have been an issue.
