Guess they figured out that some fans like me just watch the last 5 minutes of each session. And recorded, never live.
It will most likely be like the checkered flag. If you are past the start/finish line when you begin your lap before that 90 second mark is up, your lap should still be counted.
Another thing about one-at-a-time qualifying which has NEVER been mentioned is this ... Each car, irrespective of how slow it was, was shown on worldwide TV for at least one lap. That might have been the only time all race weekend that car gathered so much attention, but it was guaranteed. When was the last time a Manor, Maruissa (sp?), or other backmarker has gathered two uninterrupted minutes of solo airtime?
Yep! I loved seeing each driver do their one flying lap. All they had to do was reverse the order so the slower cars had the advantage of a warmer track and we may have seen some better racing grids!
Anyone got any more details? Cars will hold each other up if all cars are doing hot laps 24/7 If a merc or Ferrari get stuck behind a manor they get eliminated first
The problem with one-at-the-time qualifying format is that the track conditions and the weather can change dramatically between the first and the last car on the track. That can cause some upsets on the grid, with some top drivers qualifying badly because their turn to go out came during a shower, etc... Also, watching one car at the time is rather boring I find. I am not really bothered about watching a Marussia solo on the track.
I'm sorry William, but I really don't understand why you bother to watch it! Seems to me *everything* about it makes you miserable! I don't think you've *ever* said a positive thing about the entire thing. - It's all ****ed up. - The races suck. - Quali sucks. - They're all clueless idiots. - Bernie's a prick. - Todt's an idiot. - The tracks all suck. - The cars all suck. - The FIA's a bunch of clowns. - The engineers don't know up from down. And so on. No disrespect (really ) - I have no problem with criticism, but seems to me it simply makes you miserable no matter what they do. Maybe time to find another sport to follow? Cheers, Ian
F1 doesn't make miserable at all; I don't know what gave you that impression. I was just passing comments about the proposed new eliminatiuon style of qualifs, which I think is an improvment on the present system, from an entertainment point of view. I am certainly not the only one who has criticisms about F1, judging by the different opinions expressed on this forum. Do you have a problem with that?
It´s another stupid mess.....best qualy sistem ever used to me was 12 laps alowed for each driver...use the whenever you want..it's good enough for 3 or 4 runs....
So does anyone know how this is going to work in practice? Seems to me that the optimal strategy is to fuel up for one run, bolt on a set of ultra softs, return to the garage, put slippers on and wait? The top teams will easily make it through to q2 and q3 on this basis and the mid field will be playing roulette. The back marker teams get more screwed as they get eliminated much earlier thereby losing tv time and hence sponsor dollars...
It may prove to be more interesting to watch than what we had. The slower cars will be eliminated one by one, rather than by batch of 6 every session as now. There will probably be less cars standing in the garages, and drivers will have to keep on top. I think it's worth a try.
We'll lose 7 cars in Q1 and 7 in Q2. So the lower end teams get even less air time. Difference is that we don't lose them at the end, but gradually during quali! All this to entice fast cars to drive more. They'll get out earlier in Q1, put in a very quick lap and will be back in the pits. So for Q1 nothing changes, just when the fast cars come out. All they should have done was allow teams that get to Q2/3 to have more tires. Done.
Yes, the slower car will be eliminated after only 7 minutes, the next one a minute and half later, etc... So a team like Marussia last year would have had both its cars garaged after 7.5 minutes!! The slower teams can forget about air time ...
Yup. Which will make it even harder for such a team to get sponsors. Sponsors aren't complete idiots, no one is going to spend 5million+ on a car that gets 15 seconds of airtime over the course of an entire weekend.
Absolutely! The divide between winners and losers will grow bigger. Everything that has been mentioned, discussed and decided during the inter-season seems to favour the big teams. All the mentions about cheaper power units, cost savings, etc... have been disregarded and this will completely handicap up the back-markers. Mind you, it will be funny when a top team will screw up by not being ready in time, and see one of his car eliminated early on.
I disagree, now the cameras will be focusing on the one or two cars that are on the bubble every 90 seconds where you might only see them trying to show all of those 7 cars about to get bounced in the last minute or two of Q1 or Q2. Should result in a lot more air time for the slow cars as they will be the focus of the cameras while they're on the bubble to see if they can get themselves into the next 90 seconds.
No problem at all. But, it does seem to me that all you ever do is B&M about whatever it is they try & do. For sure, we (can & do) all criticize it on occasion, which is fine - We're certainly all entitled to our opinions. It just strikes me that yours are *always* negative is all.
