If somebody wants to be OCD about cleaning and polishing the opportunities are almost endless.... I was pretty bad with the Mastercraft too. we used it a lot at Lake Powell which has a lot of minerals. Vinegar wash every time it came out of the water and wax the hullsides every other time.

Yeah...Not a fan of keeping up with the hulls. I have the Marina recondition mine every year or two. I just bought a new oversized FLOE lift that will get this new boat high out of the water. I also added "canopy extensions". My hope is that the boat will be completely encompassed inside the canopies. One of my "vices" is dark hulls. They are beautiful, but a PITA to keep looking nice. I've had midnight blue, mustard yellow, and black and red hulls. Oxidation in the gelcoat is what typically gets me thinking about trading up.

It is a mystery to me why more boat companies don't just paint the hulls. My MC is burgundy gel coat which is a hassle but looks great. Once gelcoat starts fading it seems like it is a constant battle to keep it bright. Some boats are painted with Imron or any good urethane and it seems to last 3x the time. It can't be that much more expensive when they build them.

I was asking the Marina about this very thing last fall. They swear its better than paint and also its more expensive. They reminded me that the Gelcoat is supposedly 25-28 mil thick. So they say you can wet-sand the snot out of it and buff it and it will always look new. But in my experience, the results are less impressive every time I get it back. I dont know if its because the detailers aren't willing to put in the work to really get past that denuded layer or scared or of there is a composition change.

Gell coat cheaper to produce to a finish that's acceptable? I know painting my carbon bowsprit alone was gasp-inducing.

I wax three 28-foot hulls every other year but I need to change to every year now that she's in the sun 365 days.

I"m not buying what the marina says. Hatteras paints their boats and it's considered and advantage vs. gel coat. Lasts a long time, easy to touch up and very easy to clean. My boats are in the sun full time so the hull sides are done 2x per year and the rub rail up is every 90 days.

I agree with you on gel coat never being the same after it loses the original shine. It seems like it has to be restored more often.

Gel coat is cheaper, since it's the first layer sprayed in the mold - so there is no skipping the gel coat process to then paint the entire hull (or boat) once out of the mold and mostly assembled. The best finished boats and yachts are those that are painted - and they are generally the most expensive.

Repairing damaged gel coat or paint requires talent either way. As for oxidation, especially in southern climates, paint is this easiest to keep looking good. Once gelcoat is heavily oxidized is requires heavy cutting to restore the shine. Either finish can be burned through by an inexperienced hand, but the gelcoat color layer is generally thicker than paint, so there is more room for error. And paint definitely holds it's luster longer and is much easier to clean - it's not nearly as porous as gelcoat.

I'm in the boat biz, so we deal with this stuff every day.

Hi Silverpfeil! That is a lovely boat. I am a Norwegian boat broker and I have sold a few of these on the second hand market. I like them a lot and have a trailer behind my Chevrolet pickup that I use to transport them around with :) Good luck with it! Would love to get to know the Swiss lakes!!

That is magnificent. Nor-Tech came out of no where and have earned quite a reputation. They are popular with the poker-run guys. Amazing boats. Thanks for sharing.

They started in the mid 80-ies with boats in the 20-28 foot range. Then in the 90-ies the Hi-Tech 30-39 footers came. Then in late 90-ies, they moved from Norway to Ft. Meyers Florida and started Nor-tech. I worked with them at the factory for two months restoring a Fountain 47 last year. Lots of fun...

Here is my 2008 DCB F32 running about 1800hp. Love to run this out at Lake Havasu, AZ and plan to travel the country next year participating in as many poker runs as we can fit in.

Turn key. Pump gas. And, 150moh.

The season-opening classic boating event. "Fiber-glassics" are the new hot thing for classic (normally wooden) boat owners. Especially boats with fins! Google Mt. Dora and ACBS (Antique & Classic Boat Society).

    Anyway; neat boat!

Mostly period correct engines. They can be hard to live with for regular cruising though. Mine has a modern 4 stroke with tilt and trim. Necessary to navigate all the lakes in our chain in NW Wisconsin. I am tarting up the cover to make it look like a period Mercury Mark 55...work in progress...
