Hi Martin, The bolts are 12.9 Interesting point regarding the nuts - I'll investigate more. Appreciate your input Andy
FYI I secured 20 M10 Grade 8.8 Stover Nuts for £4.95 (Ebay) According to this document, they will exceed the 57ft/lbs load that is required. http://www.npfasteners.com/pdfs/max-rec-tightening-torque.pdf
Andy, these are Newtonmeters in that document. And 58.3 Nm for M10 coarse 8.8 would convert to 43 ft/lbs. But you need 80 Nm on these bolts and nuts on the axle shaft. Best Regards Martin
I have always re-used the old bolts and nuts on my Porsche's and Ferrari's, but only if the threads and heads are in fair condition. Some says that these bolts always must be changed when broken out, but that make not much sense in my opinion. I always make up the bolts to accurate torque, use the correct washers and have never had any failures. Regards Peter
Not more, since with 80Nm you have reached 0.2% yield stength of a M10 12.9 bolt, after which tension force does no more increase significantly but the bolt starts stretching with permanent set. Applying more torque just approaches elastic limit, when the bolt doesn't return to it's original length after releasing torque / tension force. Or even elongation at fracture. Best Regards Martin
