Does anybody have an idea what the heck this is? It's done the rounds on a couple of forums so far, but everyone is stumped...

The image appears to have only popped up within the last month or so (from a London transport archive - it was taken on Oxford Street, I think between 1959 and 1963).

This is a slightly cropped version, but nothing else in the frame will help, other than dating it, but that's been done already.

There are so many cars that instantly come to mind when seeing this, but nobody seems to be able to identify this particular model.

If this is the only image that exists of the car, then it could be a number of things (many people have already proposed sound suggestions).

What I'm really interested in is whether another image exists, that can actually prove what this is once and for all?

    You're very welcome. :)

No idea. It looks a little like a Marcos Engineering prototype or test mule car to me in overall profile, but that A-pillar shape and door shape looks completely bizarre. Nothing like that made it to any of their production cars, so...

    Sorry, I'm stumped.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I saw the thread lit up in bold and I thought 'Yes! Wayne or Andrew have it!'.... Haha!

Oh well... that makes two of us.

Marcos is a good - and frequent - suggestion given seating position of driver, overall size of the car, and the fact that the company was at least playing with gullwing doors (assuming that's what they are) around this time.

I think if the DB HBR5, Kaiser-Darrin, Harrington Alpine and Marcos Luton had a love child, it would probably look like this.

Fascinating car... would love to see more photos of it from other angles (if indeed they exist).

Interesting. I don't recognize it offhand, but there are some familiar elements. I should have some free time tomorrow, so let me see what I can come up with.

Given the number of people who have been shown this car, and who would have been thought of as the best people to identify it, and who have failed... I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be the only published photo of it.

Across the various threads where this photo has appeared, the following companies/brands have been thrown into the 'suggestion box' as perhaps having had some involvement with it:

Ashley, Marcos, Sunbeam, DB, Rene Bonnet, DKW, Alken, Darrin, Woodill, Pichon, Frua, Daimler (SP250), Austin Healey, Triumph, Fairthorpe, Panhard, Vignale, Arista, Nickri, Allemano, Michelotti, Glas, Sorrell... this list goes on and on.

I really hope there is another image of this car somewhere - it's fascinating.

I suppose the only other thing we can hold out for is that an 80-year-old suddenly chimes into the thread saying that they designed it! I've seen stranger things happen on Fchat...

Yes, that Gullwing has been shared a lot in the context of this search across various threads.

I was aware the photo appeared in this book, but I imagined it was the preserve of niche British bus geeks... haha! I didn't expect a copy to be held in SoCal! ;)
