Today I got the lifters that I bought from Brian. I couldn't wait to take one apart and its very easy. Taking it apart is the same as it is on that youtube video that's on the other lifter thread floating around in here somewhere. . To be clear, the lifters I bought from brian is an oem lifter. I took it apart for 2 reasons and one of course is to clean it and the other is to compare it to the VW lifter. So I want to find the VW lifter that has been discussed and take it apart for my own curiousity and ill post up my findings.

Nice. let us know what you find

They sure do pop right open with a block of wood.

Did you keep them in a bag so parts dont go flying?

well I did one at a time and I used a deep clear Tupperware container so I wouldn't loose any parts. It took me just over 2 hours to do 11 of them. I soaked them in a parts cleaner first. Then after taking them apart and wiping each part down I used brakleen to ensure cleaniness. The ones that ive cleaned so far are great

Did you see any bluing on any of them? Those are the ones that were problematic at one point.

FWIW, the trick of smacking them on a wooden block is pretty barbaric. I'm going to design and build a tool to disassemble them.

I didn't use the smack down on the board method. Using the deep Tupperware container, I reached down in and just used a needle nose to pull the lifters apart. Some were alittle stubborn but all in all its a piece of cake job, just time consuming.

I'm in for a tool but beating them is very therapeutic.

Now replacing or even knowing what is "out of spec" is the issue for us knuckle scrapers

They dont call us mechanics knuckle draggers for nothing. We are here to get the job done.

But for me the wood smaking is way better than risking tool marks on the lifter just me. I wack it it comes apart with zero posssible scars.

    Haha! Too funny, Tim :)

I tried one with the block and it would not come apart and I was concerned about the edge of the lifter body as it comes to a near sharp point.

Larry, good job using needle nose as I could not grip the piston with them.

The tool would be a collet that would grip the piston. No marks or damage would occur. :)

By the way, compressed air will help get them moving if they are really stuck... :) They do come out...
