Well, I thought Waynesboro, Virginia would be the last place to be the hotbed of the 308 market. To my surprise, the 1979 308 GTS that sold at Amelia Island for $170,000 or so, is at a friend's shop here in town.

It looks like an exquisite example. I took a couple phone shots this morning, and will go back soon to study it and photo a bit more.

So now we are a town of about 300 F-250 Ford pickups, and two 308s.

    Best to all, Jeff

    170K for a low miles 308...

Nothing special about a US 1979 model (unlike a dry sump glass car). When are the QV's going to break a 100???

It looks Rosso Dino or is that just the light?

I saw one just like it in Monterey last year

I forgot to look inside its interior while at Gooding Amelia Island. Is the leather on the seats all original, and in the amazing time-capsule condition one would expect of such a low mileage car in terms of suppleness and wear?

Tommy, it is Rosso Dino. I had not seen that color in person until today. It is really quite orange, with just a hint of red, don't you think?

I'll look at it more closely, but the interior looks original in tidy condition. It is a black interior. The carpets have a definite blue hue to them.

Hey mine's a 79... Anyone want to buy? I'll even give you 10% off... Say, $152,999?
(Those 9s make the price optically look cheaper.)

so they have here in Germany ...
even the 2Vi-Versions knock on that door while the steel carb cars were already let in ;)

    like Sheldon would put it:
Under normal circumstances I'd say I told you so. But, as I have told you so with such vehemence and frequency already the phrase has lost all meaning.
Therefore, I will be replacing it with the phrase, I have informed you thusly. :D

Yep. Honestly, the first time I saw this color back in the day, I thought it was an old sun faded red one.

OK I just noticed this car has a KM/H speedo... so that's more than just low miles, that's crazy low miles... like 3600 or so.

By "investment grade" do you simply mean a "concours condition" car which you are going to drive or do you mean the ultra low mileage time capsule which really shouldn't be driven to preserve its value? I see you have a bunch of very cool cars, but can't tell if you drive them other than the California.

With Ferraris as old as the 308s, mileage only now matters for the undriven time capsules (jokes about turning back the odometer aside). Concours condition cars CAN be driven; I have a 44,000 mile 98 point concours car which I take club rides as often as I can. This year I did the Virginia City Hill Climb (https://youtu.be/qif7h6TOXrc) (don't laugh at my bad driving).

I like Jay Leno's line; "I drive them down to 90 points then restore them back up to 100 points." 308s are a hoot to drive in the ole "more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" kinda way.

    Best wishes in your search.

I have both types of cars Brian

Trying to make my mind up about this one.... my main aim is to buy the best car i can, i am leaning towards a driver with low mileage that will appreciate. I won't put more than 300 to 500 miles a year on it. The more read i also hear the 328 is a better car , but i love the interior of the 308 and its older.

    Cheers
    Marc

    P.S Nice hill climb!

The newer model is always the "better" car in terms of performance etc, right up to today's 488. But what does better really mean?

I could have bought a 360 this summer. A far, far better car on paper than any 328, Mondial, 348 or 355 which I also looked at. But I bought another 308, because for me it was a more desirable, enigmatic and emotional experience than all of these.

Others can weigh in more authoritatively than me, but my understanding is that the carb cars don't tolerate long periods of dormancy as well as the cars with fuel injection. 300 miles is not a whole lot of miles in a year.

My 308 is the first car I've owned with K-jet CIS. A remarkably simple system; no electronics, its a hydraulically controlled system with gasoline being the hydraulic fluid.

When 328s were 5 years old and 308s were 15 years old, the technology gap must have seemed big. Now they both just similar antique cars. In my opinion, it now just comes down to personal preference.

I am settled on low mileage (<20k miles) red/tan GTB or GTS 76/77 or later QV cars .... the car in bay area is a very interesting car and i have talked to previous owner.
