As already noted, I was prepared to give it a chance. It's ****ed.

File it under "an idea that didn't work" & do something - Q1/2/3 is fine with me too.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Even better, let's have the tyre supplier bring more tyres, have a free choice and freedom to use the tyres you need to maximise the car, and enough fuel to make it interesting, then let the guys duke it out over the course of an hour. Split it into three sections of you like and dump the rubbish to clear the track for the best cars, but maybe extend each session to thirty minutes to allow plenty of tv time for the minnows, and plenty of pitstop and racing time for every car/driver to make repeated attempts at getting faster.

The races are boring enough with them all trying to save tyres and fuel and component wear, at least give the audience an hour of sprints and fast cars, rather than some stilted, boring, farcical time out session with no time for anyone to try any strategies.

Works for LeMans. Maybe not so cut and dry as a fuel cap, but they have to balance their consumption vs tank capacity to time lost in the pits. But they run at least 3 times longer than f1 cars.

Interesting BS session with Niki et al on Sky right now.

I'm expecting this nonsense to be fixed by Bahrain.

WTF are those stupid glasses on the nose of Elton, does he actually look at himself every day and consider 'what can I do to make myself look more camp/stupid?'

    Such a fool

    :D Indeed.

    Quali format. No question!

    "Hamiglasses" have huge potential. ;)

    He's got pole.......

He may look a fool, & I've certainly criticized him heavily over the years.

But, even the biggest non-fan must concede he's damn quick. Respect.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Cars quick, I wouldn't fancy his chances against a Senna or a schumi in their prime, or vettel in the same equipment. He hasn't the mental ability to cope with a real challenge, couldn't cope with button whenever Jensen was on it

    Of course.

There's good reasons those two are among the greats. He's certainly not there yet, but he's doing pretty good.

Not sure about him -v- Seb; I reckon it would be close.

I'm looking forward to watching how he versus Nico plays out.

"This is why we watch." ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Worked fine back in the 1980's, fastest car that used its fuel smart won ... far better than this fuel flow BS.

If you can find out a way to make people forget all aerodynamic and engine knowhow since then, maybe it could work.

What a mess! It's actually quite fitting that qualifying was ruined because at least now it matches the rest of this so-called sport.

Those were some "sexy laps" by Hamilton though. A bit too much time with Kanye over the winter break it seems. Where's that vomiting emoji...

To be honest, I don't give too hoots about what Hamilton does, who he's partying with, what glasses he wears or any of that stuff that has absolutely zero to do with F1 racing. It's his life so he can do as he pleases unless it's illegal. As for his performance this morning - all that can be said is that it was very solid and he did what he most needed to do - blow Rosberg into the weeds. Job done.

In other news - mclaren did ok... Better than I was expecting.

It's not dead, yet....but they are getting ready to drag it out back and hit it with an axe.

I wonder how many tens of millions of fans they'll lose this year, on top of the 200MM they've lost since WonderDwarf got put in charge of the FIA.

FIA are certainly going to do to F1 what they did to WRC.

The only vaguely interesting thing for this year looks like it will be taking the piss out of Elton and his increasingly ridiculous 'style', I doubt the races will be very entertaining for Ferrari fans as we mostly want to see us win, or at least be able to try to win, but the rules won't let us carry out enough development to do that

I wish Lewis had a stronger team mate. Rosberg crumbled. He makes Lewis look better than he is.

Absolutely right Pete. He needs to buck his ideas up and remember he smashed Elton the end of last year when the pressure was off, and there's no difference now, just a mind set. If he could do it then, he can do it now, and Elton is so fragile mentally himself once beaten, he will beat himself in future races (like the dodgems race when Elton managed to bash into various people and made himself look like it was his first day driving anything, let alone F1)

Vettel is so weak he couldn't even handle Ricrado who has now been proven to be a mid pack driver. After he was summarily eviscerated by said Ricardo he ran with his talk tucked firmly between his legs to Ferrari which not only showed how weak he is mentally but also cowardice. Vettel wouldn't stand a chance with Hamilton as a team mate he would probably look worse than Rosberg.

While a sample of one is not conclusive, the new qualifying format does indeed appear to be a loser. The bigger question is, "if the people in charge of F1 woke up every day trying to mess it up, could they have done it any better"? Seriously; this sport, which I have followed/attended since 1967, is on life support. The new tracks are soulless, the cars are ugly, the cars sound like flatulence, the complexity (and presumably expense) of the hybrid systems adds nothing to the spectacle, ditto the tire mandates, and now we have ... AN EMPTY TRACK when we should be watching a pole shootout.
How much worse can it get???? Oh yeah ... cockpit halos. That will be the last wheezing gasp of Grand Prix racing.
    Nice job, F1.
