I already own a very sound 1977 that was preserved as a driver and I am just finishing up the full mechanical re-built with a little cosmetic of the interior ... now a very unique opportunity presents itself and I am in need of some advise.
I love the ur-turbo and I have been on the look-out for a possible second one at a sensible price/value point.
I know I will never make such a good investment like the 1977 I purchased a few years back for what sounds today like a very low 55K USD!
But if I will add a second at the current market price, on an average I will have two very nice cars for a reasonable price.

In the last few days I made contact with the owner of a true 1975 ur-turbo and I have the opportunity to purchase it for what looks like a resonable price, but we know the price trend has just reversed corse and the valuations of late 2014 are now history ... so I am worried about getting into the market near the top and never recovering what I may dump into this new adventure.

The car had four owners in total and is matching with the original service book (very difficult, I presume, for the few 1975).

Now the negatives, that will cost substantial $$$ to put right if I will want to bring it up to a high standard (and the rarity of the model deserves so).

Mechanically appears as having just undergone a full rebuilt, but it was badly re-painted in a not-original color.
Also the interior needs some tiding-up (cover of center speaker in dashboard definitely broken, added speakers in the doors, ...) and the side mirrors are from a 1976 model.
This is what I can already see from pictures, but a close inspection will reveal probably much more to be put right.

The car was apparently raced by the first owner in period (1975-76) with some RSR modifications (still available separately) and then sat for a long time.
This may be scary, but if properly documented may also add to the historic appeal of the car (maybe).

I had experience with mechanical rebuilt on mine (expensive but relatively straighforward) but very little with interior trimmings and chassis as mine was very well preserved: as a consequence I am a little afraid this 1975 may be a money pit by the time you start taking it apart and you find what hides under the bad paint job or you start missing the difficult to find interior bits.

What would be a fair market value for such a driver, that will end up needing almost as much work as a project (beside the mechanical part that should be ok)?

Am I correct assuming that the current market value for a fully restored 1975 would be in the 300-350 USD range and that a fully respray and hestetic restoration (engine, again, should be 100% ok) may have a "safe" budget of about 100k?
As a consequence would it be a wise decision to go ahead for a price around 200-250?

Having already another 930 3.0 this would be mostly an investment rather than a real driver for me.

    Opinions are welcome, thank you.

Re-paint is not a big-deal but what’s underneath is much more important. Broken dash pad speaker is easy to fix; many 1975’s have been molested with speakers in the doors and I chose to maintain the original 1975 door card leather and use 1976 speaker covers vs. replacing the original leather. Almost every 1975 has been molested with 1976+ mirrors, again no big deal...unfortunate non-the-less.

This could be a good thing. I love the fact that my ’75 Turbo had track time at Seattle, Riverside, Laguna Seca, etc. It goes against the never-driven low miles collector trend but very few, perhaps nil, 1975 Turbos are true low mileage examples (always beware replacement/altered speedometers and check part # and reverse for date – so easy to expose a not-so-low mileage 3-liter Turbo).

Interior is much easier to deal with than what may lie underneath a bad paintjob. Lack of rust and body damage, original engine & gearbox w/ correct parts will help determine market value more than interior bits or bad paint.

    Thanks idart.

Unfortunately the speedo is not the original one having being replaced at some point in its history - currently it has a 150mph speedo fitted. Dated 7/76.

Interestingly, this car came with the optional 9/36 final drive (9/38 being standard):

"930/32 - 4 speed with rear axel final drive 9/36 (not for USA)"

I'd unless the car was still in race trim - having been a race car at one time ads nothing to value- coolness factor maybe but not value. I have a 76 I am restoring that used to be someone's track rat- we have dealt with a few issues once we got paint off of car that were most likely caused by over exuberant track use.

    Good Luck!

The German 1976 Turbo Driver’s manual has the same notes as the Porsche Cars Great Britain manual reflecting that 50 series tires were standard and 60 series tires optional for the 1976 model year. I have three versions of 1976 Turbo manuals: Turbo Carrera (10/75); British market (11/75), and German market (9/75). There must have been an earlier 1976 Turbo Carrera owner’s manual printed since chassis #’s 0011-0015 were delivered prior to 10/75.

Last week I bought my sixth Porsche 930 Turbo 3.0. The car was advertised on Mobile.de, I called the owner and we made an arrangement to see the car. The price was not bad, so he had a lot of phone calls and did not want to reserve the car for me. As a result I booked the first flight from Amsterdam to Barcelona and I arrived at 09:11 in the morning. Manel, the seller, was there with the car. I inspected it and we made a deal. There were two people from Germany and France pushing on the car, so I had to pay the full asking price.
After that he left and I stayed at the airport until my returnflight left at 1700. No punishment, since the weather was nice. I slept for two hours on the grass in front of the airport. The car did not have airco and no sunroof - just like my 5 other Turbos. I like the pure and clean look and feel of these no option cars. And it saves me a lot of trouble from restoring them ;-) It needs a new spoiler, a repaint in Grand Prix Weiss and some repair work in the front due to a small accident in the past, but it's free of rust and the interior is all original. The engine sounds great and does not use any oil, so I decided to fly back the next week and drive the car home - a 1600 km journey through Spain, France and Belgium.

The next week was very busy for me, so my preparations for the trip were not fantastic. When I arrived at the airport in Amsterdam I noticed that my passport was not valid any longer and also I had to convince Manel that I was going to drive the car home on his license plates and with his insurance.
The customs people did not look at the date on my passport and after some talking - Manel is a very nice guy and a real car collector - he gave us the car and we drove off to the Pyrenee mountains on his license plates.
Weather was good, the engine ran very well and we travelled to France without any problems. But after 100 kms in France the road was blocked completely by a big accident. Many firemen, police and six or seven wrecked cars. It took 1,5 hours before the mess was cleaned up.
Two hours after that (in the South of France) there was a warning for snowfall. I laughed, we were driving in a T-shirt and the sun was shining. But only 20 kms after that the first snow came down...

In ten minutes time we drove into winter wonderland. Snow ploughs tried to clean the roads but it was no use. Driving became almost impossible and we had to leave the highway. We stayed in a highway motel, had a so-so diner and the next morning it was like nothing had happened. The snow had melted, the sun was shining and we headed home. After 1570 kms we arrived safely in the Netherlands. I removed the plates and sent them back to Manel. It was a great road trip and the engine started to drive better and better along the way. The car will be restored after my viper green 1977 is finished. It needs a correct exhaust, I will remove the right side mirror and I will put on the correct 7 and 8J 15 wheels and some more details, but in the end I think it will be a nice car. The only option was a Bamberg, and I still have a spare one here.

Looks like a Blaubunkt Bamberg is installed and would be interesting to see if this was a factory option with door speakers (but not the speaker covers currently installed).

Very 70's 80's the power antenna on the roof. Not original but funny period option as the first ruf turbo had.

I was fable to find an Otaki 1/12 scale model kit of the 1973 Frankfurt Turbo in silver. This was the first 1/12 Otaki kit…the only version that was motorized and had three sets of decals. Otaki later released two different 1/12 scale box art versions in Viper Green metallic. It was last released by Entex with yellow plastic body parts and artwork.

Here’s an assembled version of the early silver kit PORSCHE 911/930 Turbo 1973 prototype

Rare indeed, but being a Swiss car (I assume), there would be taxes payable on top (usually around 20%). Still not expensive I believe though
