I have spoke at length to some collectors Porsche is well liked across the board, history, attitude, company in General is well respected Ferrari is not as liked. Kind of like that really pretty girl who is a beotch and the friendly ugly one I guess we like Beotch's
Porsche has started early to provide good service at reasonable prices for "old" and later "historic" cars. Porsche has a long standing reputation in keeping all their production cars "on the road". And Porsche does so without any snobbish attitude. This results in the situation that you can sell a Porsche with 200k or 300k km for a quite high price, as one still will be able to drive it for another decade, supported by the factory. Ferrari has done a part of its homework in the last years. However, e.g. with the Classiche certificates, it maybe heading again more to the "museum-like" preservation of cars, than to support their wide "use" as (historic) sport cars. If Ferrari does not improve the support of affordable maintenance of its older cars, it will be remaining a "collectors" brand, rather than a "drivers" brand.
I am surprised that you imply that porsche cup cars are road legal. My recollection is that they are not. I have seen some that may have been approved on a single vehicle basis but I doubt this is a given across the EU. RS models are fully road legal obviously but different to cup cars. On the question of relative value, I agree with you. Does anyone know how many were made.
Porsche 993 Cup concours condition, road registration 399k euro Porsche 964 Cup 1991, concours condition, road registration 300k euro Porsche 964 Cup 1992, perfect, road registration 285k euro Maybe a Porsche is more popular....
They are as they are a more "sociable" car company I personally do not like Ferrari as a company at all, sometimes I wonder why I even own them much less 4 of them LOL The cars are not mainstream and more elusive then a Porsche, I think that.s the reason. Ferrari is a very hush hush company, even factory workers only know what they are to do and not the "big picture" of things. Once and IF they ever become a true family they can really build a brand, until then they will be known as the crazy Uncle that live's in the basement with his bottles of wine with the girly magazenes.
The only explanation I can come up with is the long history of the 911 model. In the Porsche world people are fans of the dominant model - the 911. And because of that there is a strong cult following of the special models in the 911 line up. Compare that to Ferrari, where every few years the model line up is ditched and an all new car is produced. Hard to develop a long lasting appreciation for a certain model when it is replaced every 5 years or so.
"They are as they are a more "sociable" car company" "I personally do not like Ferrari as a company at all" I agree
in period 993 cup and supercup seemed to have had the performance edge over 355 CH. When researching the history of my car when it raced in GT3 / GT4, the result pattern seemed to suggest 993 to be faster cars. I am not sure about their respective makers 'soft' value. All I can say was when I had a look at Ferrari IPO documents there was a slide showing the 10 most expensive classic cars of all times based on recent transactions. 9 out of 10 were ferraris. Can't recall what was the non ferrari car but I am not even sure it was a porsche. Clearly LdM ego didn't seem to affect these values...
Consider this, the 944 Cup cars don't sell for as much as the 911 cup cars. Within the Porsche lineup the 911 has a special status and lineage. There is no comparable in the Ferrari lineup due to the complete redo every five years. If the 355 was still being sold today,in a refined modern version, I am willing to bet the old cars would garner more interest.
This is what I mean. Carrera Cup Car 1990 Asking is US$ 360.000 https://www.classicdriver.com/de/car/porsche/911-964-cup/1990/403670 Why should a F355 Challenge be so much cheaper??? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Historically, Cup Cars have almost always been cheaper than their road-going counterparts. What we have right now is a Porsche bubble. 355 Challenges are so underpriced it isn't even funny.
