I will attempt to reset the ECU since I had a plethora of lights come on yesterday. Started with 1-6 bank light which disappeared after getting on the highway. However car ran without full power even with the light out. 15 min into drive multiple lights come on for both banks for 3 seconds and spontaneously turn off. Engine now running with full power without issues.

Hard to believe that none of this occurred in a 40 minute test drive or in the PPI!

Will attempt a battery disconnect (BDS) and a reset based on TAZ's previous posts which I will attach for other newbies like me. Understand that there needs to be no input from the driver. AC switch is to be depressed down? Correct? Other things that need to be off?

Will also try to clean contacts of SLow Down ECU (SDECU) as I understand they are very accessible. Took me a bit to understand acronyms.

Protocol attached below: (I assume it applies to both 456 and 550 models)

Yours is most likely a motronic 2.7 so this procedure would not apply to your car.

AK- That procedure was for Motronic 7.1.1 and 7.3. For your car with 2.7:

Turn off A/C and radio and any other accessories. Use battery disconnect switch to turn off battery and wait until engine is full cold. Reconnect battery. Turn ignition switch to on and wait 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch to off and wait 30 seconds. Turn ignition switch to on, wait for check ok, and start. Allow to idle for 10 minutes with no input whatsoever. Turn accessories back on. Drive gently for 10-20 minutes.

That is a combination of things written in various tech data and should do the trick.

Also spelled out in the WSM, I think.

    AK- Slow down, (no pun).

You started with an oil pressure question. Is that resolved?

If you haven't seen it, check out one of my posts and the advice thereafter.

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/456-550-575/398510-5-things-learned-about-456gt.html

Also download the F355 WSM. It will tell you how to check the codes w/o an SD1 (the factory diagnostic tool that's probably not available outside the dealer). Note the ECU's in the '95 456GT are different from the other V-12's. But the F355 has the 2.7 system too.

In other words, the '95 is unique and a lot of the stuff you'll read here about the electronics on newer V-12's will not apply.

As usual, please let us know what you find and what works. We '95 owners want to know.

    Regards.....Mark

Thanks Mark. Great deal of stuff to learn on this site and with the car .

Oil pressure will be addressed later this week by the mechanic. The CEL SD light issue may have been a result of my incorrect starting of the engine before it was primed to start. Tested it yesterday and waited a full 20 sec once all electronics were ready engine started without problems. Had only 2 short 1sec flashes of bank 1-6 only a few minutes post start. None subsequently. Drove OK and no further CEL or SD signals. Engine still felt slightly sluggish when pushing on the gas in 4th or 5th from 2500 RPM. Still am not sure exactly how car should feel. Will ask mechanic to put car on the computer when we address the oil pressure issue. Still will try to clean all contacts I can get to easily.

Also to just verify. When I start the engine key is turned to position2 all lights come on. Spoiler resets and all other lights go off except BOTH CEL 1-6 and 7-12 and Both SDL. Engine then starts with out a problem and all lights turn off.

Would be interested in directions as to how to read faults w/o Ferrari computer. Will also download other 355 manuals. Have read many if not all threads about CEL and SD including yours.

    Mildly anxious new 456 owner!

    AK

    Great AK:

The self diagnostic info may be found at page C-47 in the F355 WSM. But the button(s) you have to push are in a different location on the 456GT; that info is at page C-13 in the 456GT OWNER'S MANUAL. (They're on the footwells on the dirver's and passenger sides; there is one for each bank and the OM doesn't tell you there are two.) The info is missing entirely in the downloadable 456GT WSM.

And, yes. The CEL's light momentarily on start up and go off. The WSM and OM explain the protocol for a light to stay on and how to reset if they do stay on. The fact that you have no lights remaining on is good. Don't worry too much. Sounds like everyone gets bogus CEL's.

One more thing, the federally mandated OBDII is not on the '95's so don't think you can use the diagnostic tool most people are using. The '95 F-cars use a SD-1 system, which is hard to come by. But, the M2.7 has a system on-board and it's easy to use anywhere, even while driving. Bad news is it don't tell you much and what it does is lost in translation, least on me. ;)

    Good luck....Don't panic...Mark

PS... Looked at the 355 WSM. Says you have to connect to diagnostic equipment. You don't. Codes flash through the CEL. Just press the button as directed and you'll see.

456 - push button to display flash code.

I've read the OM and WSM no mention of this button.

Has anyone found it - can share photo.

Daniel- Yup, here is a more up to date version. Works for just about all the late Ferraris.

    Run cycle.

Turn battery disconnect switch off and turn off all accessories (stereo, A/C, etc).
Let engine get completely cold or wait at least 30 minutes.
    Reconnect disconnect switch.
    Disarm immobilizer with the fob.
Insert key in ignition and leave for 30 seconds.
Turn ignition to on and leave for 30 seconds.
Turn ignition off and leave for 30 seconds.
Turn ignition on, wait for Check OK, and start. May have to push fob again if 120 seconds have elapsed since last fob actuation.
Let idle with no input whatsoever for 10 minutes.
Turn accessories back on and drive gently for 10-15 minutes at least.
You will have to insert stereo code, if required.

Daniel- Hopefully that is not it, but better than something wrong with the bottom end. This machine shop comes highly recommended by our pros and CHE for valve guides. Good manganese bronze work at least as well as the factory sintered steel.

Hopefully something more affordable like spark plug wires.

Got the car home very gently, shope not ready till next week, But for my education
bearing in mind I have full faith in my mechanic, why would plugs and wires cause oil
    on the fouling plugs.

Terry the reset worked a treat on mine and is now printed and lives in the glove box!

Is the car using much oil?
One other issue that was an early problem with my car was there was a not fully seated connector to one bank of coils.

From my experience the fouling of the plugs is the oil in the cylinders from the guides it that is the case and I hope that it's not. The only way to clear fouled pugs with unleaded fuel is to physically clean the plugs or change them but fouled plus are a symptom of a bigger problem IF that what it is.

If I can offer a suggestion the only way to inspect for guide clearance is take the inlet manifold off and use a boroscope, compression check looking for a difference in pump up rates ie the number of times it takes to achieve the highest compression will be a guide.

I have CHE guides in mine and when I asked if there was a run in procedure the comment back was , start it let it warm up til the fans cut in, let it cool down and then drive it like you stole it!

    Guides it is then.
I look on the positive side of this, top end overhaul, shims, new with the latest gaskets and belts, 3 to 5 years of just oil changes and mine definitely runs more smoothly.

I agree Mine had the belts done only 3months before the heads came off.
I love the car and am slowly bonding with it after it spent 8 months in the workshop, more on that here.
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/australia/474777-i-bought-my-first-ferrari-my-wifes-happy-bonus.html.
But at least my wife likes the car until the nation debt bill arrived, passivated by increase in value.
I hope the new cars are better developed and screwed together, sticky bits and shrinking leather, hood lining sagging and rattles(grr) ,leaking shocks leave a bit to be desired. Until you drive it, a friends wife ounces asked what makes it special, It's the way it drives and how it makes you feel.
