Man that look's great on a 348. My only concern is how safe are the wheels now? I wonder if shaving them down can create any stress cracks? Anyone who has done this - if you could please pipe in and let us know, how long have you "rolled" on a shaved wheel. I know its not much but I would hate to go through the trouble only to have to deal with that. BUT damn it looks so good!
The shop I use for my wheels are guys I trust and have trusted for years with my customer cars....high dollar, high powered cars. We've done a lot of wheels over the years and always put safety first above anything. We looked at the wheels very closely and determined that we were going to be safe due to the thickness of the material that was left. Trust me, I didn't like the idea of machining these things at all but we went for it. The guys doing the machining, which is all they do, did not see any issues either...I guess this is common in their world. I felt comfortable and I'm glad I did it.
Thanks for that information, do you know if they do any kind of XRAY of the wheels afterwards to see? No am not being paranoid just a total TYPE A, can't help it. And yes they look awesome, but you have not "rolled" on them long. And I live in LA the land of Pot Holes thanks to our lovely infrastructure so wheels are not a permanent fixture.
amazing how just a different set of wheels.. and lowering the height can transform the car.. looks fantastic and makes the car look years more modern.. oem 348 rims are just horrible, keeping the car looking out dated..
I did not Xray the wheels and I haven't driven on them for very long but I'm not very worried about them from what I saw on the backside. I would have never cut them if there was any risk at all. Suspension is stock. I tried to like the OEM wheels on the 348 but I couldn't do it. I wanted the Speedlines but couldn't find them. When I stumbled on these, they looked like the exact wheel that belongs on this car....in my opinion at least. I couldn't be happier. The car gets a lot of attention in my shop and I think the wheels play a big role in that.
Thank you for answering all of my questions, it is absolutely stunning. But one last questions for all of us - what size tires front and rear did you put on?
Excellent! Good job on the machining. My OZ Superleggera IIIs were designed for older rear lug bolts but with more lip and a wider wheel. Tire Rack suggested same profile numbers which made for a beefier rear tire. Same balance as on the Enzo. Let me know how the grip is on the rear under hard acceleration. I don't see any issue and cornering is fine even on the shorter lugs. In fact, the wheel lip is in line with the fender lip right at dead center on the fender arch. Better than old spec, a tiny bit tighter than 94 stock spec but with a wider contact patch. And yes, the mesh spokes work very well with the slats. Gets the whole linear look tied up nicely. Slats, grill, spokes. And have you noticed that slats are back on the 488? Booyah. Nice job on the lowering too. I lowered mine but noticed I have some spring fatigue on the drivers side. Same amount of turns down on both sides so I'm pretty sure it's not symmetric. I may go up a turn on the driver's side. Do you think it will effect the alignment? I did have it done afterwards last spring.
I don't have any machine pics. Maybe I can grab a shot of the backside the next time they are off. The company that did the work is a big wheel supplier in our area....they probably manufacturer wheels as well. I guess machine work like this is normal in the wheel biz. The wheels really do work for the car. I spent a lot of time thinking about these. I love the mesh look on the cars but I wanted something a little more simple so as not to distract from the busy look of the cars with the slats and louvers. But they needed to be a little interesting. This is the best blend between not too much and not too little. The size is right, the shape is right and the color really pops. It's a very high metallic silver...I would guess it's kind of like a Hyper Silver offered by a lot of companies.
Another angle of the car. We're currently building a Serie Speciale tail light conversion for the cars...hence the blue tape and slightly unfinished rear of the car. Wheels look really cool with the SS setup. Kind of modernizes the car without making it too modern. Image Unavailable, Please Login
what's the widest tire you can get under there? I run 315/35/17 on the rear. I just had a friend sell a set of 360 Challenge wheels, if I had known I would have purchased em. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
You can easily go to 11inch wide possibly 12 if you want to go nuts. I found the feel anything over 295 rear on challenge rim width tend to go the other way. I have 245 front and 295 on my 348CH. front is first to go however I have not weighed the car yet.
Definitely the 360 challenge wheels are my favorite wheels on the 348. Now owners can return all the F355 rims back to our inventory! Robb
The Challenge wheels look awesome on your 348, good choice! Most of the aftermarket wheels on our cars make me cringe, nice to see another modern OEM set that works great on an older model. I have 360 starfish wheels on my 3.2 Mondial and they really fit the car well. Alden
