What's the correct Position for the 'Cavallino Rampante - Shield' on a 348's wing?

Am getting very very close to resurrecting my 348 back to road-worthiness.

As the re-spray will complete over the weekend, I would like to put the 'Cavallino Rampante - Shield' back in the correct position, but I don't know what the exact position should be. Am hoping an 'Expert' can help.

Wing is the fender? There is no emblem there.

 

Your probably going to get some grief from some owners for wanting to have the shields on your car, but it's your car so have it how you want it!

Correct - Unless it was a 348 Challenge, GTC, or Competizione car.

The factory wings have the badges embossed into the wing itself (as shown in the picture in My post above), and almost all of the 348's you'll see with the badges are going to be after-market badges that are either magnetic or self adhesive.

As I've previously posted, some owners get on their high horse about fitting the badges but it's your car not theirs, so if you want the badges, just go ahead and be happy!

 

Interesting, It had the badges on the car when I got it. The Replacement Wings also had Badges on the Wings when I got them. But having taken them off (Without thinking) for the re-spray was looking to put it back to standard...in my mind and from the trail of evidence so far.. that meant fitting the Badges.

If a '94 TS was badge less, that's ok with me.

 

Yes, back to standard would be without the badges.

 

Its your car do what you want. It looks great. Had mine done - they actually pressed the fender like the factory. Either way, it looks great!

Appreciate the support in 'Going for it' and perhaps in the future. Having had the car for about a year now I have been focused on getting it back to original intent and back on the road so I can have my first and subsequent drives in it.

 

When I got my 348SS fourteen years ago, it came with sticker badges on the fender. I thought they looked nice and I left them on for many years. However, over time I began to feel the original clean look was best and removed them.

 

It is called a wing in the UK.

 

Also need to be aware that over time and with a bit of sun exposure the shield sticker can leave a shadow of where it was in the paint that can sometimes be hard to remove.

 

I think they look really cool when sat into an indented location, as per factory, even if its been done post production. I'm not so keen on the stuck on non indented surface.

But for your car you need to do what you feel comfortable with and what you like the look of. 1994 is a late 348 (is it a GTS?) so you'd certainly get away with the look, as they worked toward 355 Prod.

 

… and to my knowledge resp. info from Michelotto, on the 348 GT Competizione, GTC LM, the "scudetti" were screwed on but never been embossed into the fenders - embossed fender shields came indeed first with 355...

 

348 Challenge cars didn't come from the factory with shields.

 

If you do decide to fit shields, or attach anything else to the paint, I suggest you wait a few months before doing so. It takes quite a bit of time for paint to fully cure and affixing something to it too soon can lead to permanent marking of the finish. In fact, I would delay fitting the nose badge for that same reason. Cure times vary with paint formulations but your painter _should_ be able to guide you.

Congrats on nearing the point of completion. Enjoy the process though. The end results will be worth waiting for.

 

I keep going back and forth on the badge install. I should have taken video of the conversation I had about it with my 3 year old. He really wants me to put the "stickers" on the car. I have nice badges to put on, but I'm still not sure. I went so far as to also get the nicer stickers and put magnets on the back so I can look at them on the car to see if I like them.

 

I'd like to have a whole set of "magnetic" stickers to replicate the racers when doing a track day and then pull them and save them.

I wonder if technology is there now? Strong enough for 110 mph.

At the end of the day, in the same way that some BMW owners get on their high horse about ///M badges on BMW's that aren't M3's/M5's/M6's etc., it's all a fuss over nothing really!

 

My painter had not mentioned anything about cure times. In fact it was him that asked where I wanted the Decals located that led to kicking of this thread. Will ask him on Monday.

Thanks, I've been struggling with the numerous 'should complete at the end of this/next weeks'. Been so close for a while now it hurts.
Am hoping, fingers crossed, the car will be back this week, the MOT a formality and in use by the end of the week.

 

That'd definitely be the way to go if getting it done. How did you find a place to do it? And did you supply the shields or did they source them for you?

Shiels on Ferrari, mean very little about the car. On BMW's the M implies completely different cars. Tuned engine, advanced suspension and braking system just to name a few. It looks silly to the point of embarrassment to put the "M" on regular BMWs. Of course my opinion reflects the fact I own/owned a few M badged BMWs; E30 M3, E46 M3, Z4M. And I wouldn't put an M on my E31.

 

SCS in Los Angeles did the work, they are THE shop for Beverly Hills Bentley, Lamborghini and only do extremely high end work. I have known the owner for years he use to be affiliated with Symbolic Motors. They have the press similar to Premiere's and it I saw the entire process. Amazing work, the Shield where sourced from a Ferrari dealer and are OEM.

 

Ha! Same here, except that I haven't bought the magnetic "test shields" yet. I had decided against it until my my own mother, of all people, pointed out the shields on a black 355 and said they'd look good on my 348. Since my car is black I think the splash of color would help and I figure that, as the owner, I'm the one I need to make happy.

But the mention of BMW ///M badges is a great counterpoint-- as a longtime ///M owner I hate seeing those on anything but a true Motorports car, and in fact think they've come from the factory on several cars that do not have the pedigree to be called a true ///M (including my own US spec e36 M3, which I sometimes refer to as my 332 Ci).

My internal debate continues, but I gotta say I've seen far more objectionable mods (to my eye) on this very forum, some of which seem pretty popular. Having done some detailing yesterday, that side of me is currently objecting to them on the basis that they make polishing more difficult. Oh well, it's nice topic to debate and this thread has helped the process.

 

Yup, really. I owned a 348 Challenge for 7 years (#24 of 32 tb's). Mine was a factory Challenge and never came with shields. I'm not aware of any other factory Challenge that came with shields. That's not to say that some owner didn't install them. Or that owners of cars in the Challenge race series didn't install them either.

Also, pic 4 from the web site that you noted didn't have shields. Other pics show shields but for the most part are pre'94 cars (notice that they're 2 tone red with black lower rocker and spoiler).
