Break Squeal!! It happened for the first time. I was returning from a 350 mile trip, and they started with light pressure. I have 1000 miles and broke the car in on the track at VIR. I did not have the problem on Italia or F12. I'm just hoping that washing the car may get some dust out, or something. Anybody else yet?

Usually it gets better after a wash but it returns after a while.

I just had some work done on mine to try and fix this.. no luck. They still squeal like a stuck pig. Ferrari says it's a maintenance issue and won't warranty. Please let me know if you get any further than I did.

My car is at 1900 km now. I too broke it in on track and they are now LOUD!!! The speciale does this too if it's driven hard at a young age.....

We may just have to live with it as my buddy with a speciale has been trying to sort it for a year or more

If it's track inflicted, there is no cure. I struggled with it on my Speciale and gave up. Only a new set of front pads could cure it, but if u track it hard, it's ruined again. If it's glazed rotor due to constant light braking, some hard braking would clean it up.

I'm afraid not. When mine started, I was somewhat expecting it and just shrugged my shoulders....

If it's practical for u, have a separate set of front pads just for track. That's what I would do if I ever plan to track these cars again.

What kind of things did you try to resolve it? I just had a thin layer of my pads taken off and the rotors roughed up some.. that helped for about 2 days.

Did new pads really solve it for you? I figured taking a layer off the pads was essentially the same thing but it didn't help. I'd happily get new pads if I really thought that would help.

Yeah, the dealer champered a layer off the front pads and it helped for a few days, but returned with a vengeance. I have also tried using high pressure water jet to wash the pads, but no difference at all. When they inspected the front pads eventually, they found out that the backing of the front pads have rusted due to high heat corroding away the paint. That means the pads were put through high heat cycle possible only on the track or when doing some hard core pad bedding. Yes, you can ruin the pads doing too much bedding as well. The front pads also showed signs of cracking beyond the surface. That causes dirt to get trapped and hence, the squeal. The squeal on my Speciale only happened each time after the brakes warmed up for some strange reasons. Changing a new set of front pads completely eradicated the problem for months. I did not encounter any squeal for 3 months right up until I sold the car. I have not tracked the car since the pads replacement. The strange thing is that some Speciale owners who track their cars don't experience much squealing. I can only guess that it's due to different style in braking.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I am currently in this situation. They took a layer off the pads and that helped for a whole 50 miles and it came back with a vengeance as well. I'm considering buying new pads but wanted to be sure that would solve the problem before dropping $9K and ending up with the same issue.

I am certain it's driving style / capability on the track. As I've said in other threads.. if you are an experienced hard core track driver that knows how to threshold break deep in corners.. this will happen to your brakes. If you are a casual track driver just having fun, I expect you'll drive away with no issues at all.

It's just very frustrating that $50K La Ferrari brakes can't handle a single day on the track. And Ferrari won't do anything about it.. that is not surprising.

If anyone else has experience, please add.

Hang on there, mate. 9k for the front pads? I hope u are not planning on changing the rotors as well as it's not required. Things are generally more expensive where I am and I only paid around USD$3k for the front pads.

As I have said, the best way to enjoy these cars on the track without hurting the drive on the streets is to have a separate set of pads for track. I would go for a not too aggressive pad compound for track instead of stock pads for longevity. I know it might not be practical for some where the dealership is too far away. Get them installed while doing pre-track inspection and later swap them back during post-track inspection. These inspections are highly recommended for safety reason and long term health of the car. This I figure, is the only way to fully enjoy the car without u hating it after the track due to massive squeal.

Did it on our CS, 458 and very likely upcoming 488.

This is the sound of CC breaks. That's it. No matter how you brake in, how careful you are, ... it will come at some point.
It's horrible, but changing pads or whatever you may ask to the dealer (been through this) will not change the situation durably.

If you can't live with it (going through a crowded town is real tough....), then steel brakes are the only alternative.

So, to be clear, is this only common for cars that are tracked?

A lightly driven car would cause glazing of the rotors, which also squeal. This is not as severe however and can be cured by some hard braking. Glazed rotors look like it's polished and look shiny.

I also once had brakes squeal on a 911. My mechanic recommended a little copper grease on the backside of the pads. Brake squeal was gone, never came back!

This method doesn't work for Ferrari's CCB. The service manager shared with me that they have done it before with no effect because the squeal is not coming from the backside of the pads.
