Thoughts on 330GTC vs 365GTC?

Curious on what everyones thoughts are on the desirability of the 330GTC vs 365GTC. In this environment, what are the cars worth and what's a fair difference in values between the 2 models? Thanks.

The 330 is much more valuable we have two where I work. One is a one of a kind owned by enzo Ferrari himself. It was made while the 250's were still being made. It is a twin headlight. It is different from all the other 330's because this had a more powerful motor and everything is located differently than the other car's. I will try to get a picture of it tomorrow as it is in the garage and not in the shop

I guess the 365 carries a premium over the 330 for being rarer and more powerful, however I know a lot of people prefer the looks of the 330 with the side vents?

If I was looking to buy I would be prepared to pay more for a 365 compared to an equivalent 330.

 

You are referring to a 330 GT 2+2 (4 headlight car). The 330 GTC and 365 GTC are 2 seaters. Production on them started in 66 I believe.
I like the side vent styling of the 330 GTC, personally. I owned 10767 for a few years (traded it for a Miura) so I guess I'm biased. The top vents on my QM are similar to those on a 365 GTC. If the QM had side vents, it would almost look like a 500 SF.

 

365 GTC's have commanded approximately a $100 - $150k premium to 330 GTC's recently.
Objectively 365 GTC's are more powerful and rarer.
Subjectively, in the eyes of this beholder at least, 330 GTC's are prettier.

But there was a special car built for Enzo himself while the 250's were still being built. I will get pictures today when I go to work soon. It is a beautiful car. We are restoring it and it is coming along great. If you've ever heard of Bob/Robert Norwood that is my boss. We restore/upgrade older Ferraris. In few days we are going to be restoring a testorossa that got wrecked with 4400 miles

From memory I thought there was one prototype made for PininFarina family (?) of 365 with the side vents, or am I confused?
Then everyone would know what to buy, the driving train of 365 and the body of 330...

 

Researched and yes there was the Pirelli ( not PF) 365 GTC likely to be 10581...with the side vents...😀

 

Much has been said about this topic. Most enthusiasts seem to prefer the side vents. I've owned both, and I'd say the biggest difference is the out-and-out performance advantage of the 365.

Think of it this way- one has "go fast" vents, the other has "go fast" mechanicals.

 

I appreciate all of the feedback. I'm negotiating now to purchase a 365GTC. While I favor the aesthetics of the side vents, everyone here and all I've talked to favor the 365 when it comes to the driving experience and overall mechanicals. As these cars like many others have fallen from recent highs, and there seems to be a pretty good supply available, any thoughts on fair valuations? I think I have a pretty good feel for the market, but would like to hear different perspectives. Thanks.

 

Hi, Ken - way back, I worked on a few 365 GTCs and, from memory, here are some of the differences:
330 has Hardy-Spicer half shaft universals. 365 has CV joints.
365 has a Daytona transaxle (needle bearings instead of bushings) - much better shifting when cold.
330 has electrical AND mechanical fuel pumps, 365 has only electrical.
As I recall both engines used the same crankshaft but the bore was increased from 77 MM to 81 MM.

I heard somewhere that the damping was different on the 365 shocks but I can't confirm that.

I haven't driven a 365 GTC, but from what I've heard, the additional torque is more noticeable than the additional horsepower over the 330 GTC.

Also, from what I recall (experts verify), all 365 GTCs have a center handbrake; whereas, only the latest 330 GTCs had that. Most 330 GTCs, such as mine, have the under dash umbrella style hand brake.

There are other changes that were made through the 330 GTC run that the 365s received also, but I'm not up to speed on all those changes so not qualified to try to document them.

I liked the side vents, and I tend to buy early examples of cars, so I have a '66 330 GTC.

 

They both drive wonderfully. They both perform very well. A personal favorite of mine for a classic road Ferrari. 365 is a better buy simply because of the lower production and more accessible low-end torque for around town driving. That said, the 330 has plenty.

Aesthetically, I am indifferent. Side vent, top vent, they both look good. I prefer the Compagnolo wheels over the Boranni's on either model. Makes her look more rugged/muscular.

Buy the best that is available in either 330 or 365 guise. You will not be disappointed.

 

I have a 330 GTC. For the looks, I do not like the plastic vents on the hood of the 365. The side vents on the 330 look much better & more well balanced.

While I am not a professional, I drove both cars---very little difference to me.

Have owned and driven both extensively. Looks are personal, but for me either is pretty. As for the drive, the 365 is significantly better. As folk say, the HP is less noticeable but the Tq is very evident. Add in the substantially greater rarity in numbets and the fact that is was of the last of the chrome bumber lineage... stunning car and very undervalued compared to a 275 i feel. That said I think the whole market is ripe for a correction (and I am long so talking against my own book) but lets not go there!

Received my 365GTC late Sunday. The car was owned by a fellow f -chatter for the past 15-16 months. He had the engine rebuilt by Ferrari of Beverly Hills and had extensive cosmetic work done including an engine detail among other things by Rex Nguyen out in the LA area. Overall the car is very nice with a couple of minor issues including a broken light stalk and a few electrical maladies that hopefully will easily be corrected. Great car to drive, I'm trying to learn more about the history of the car. It had been serviced at Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, Ct over the past 10-15 years and ultimately was traded/brokered through them before it made it's way to Exclusive Motorcars and the previous owner in the LA area about 18 mo ago. Was recently at the Rodeo Drive Concours on Fathers day, i was told. Did not sell at the Santa Monica Auction America event a few weeks ago and that's how I became aware of it and ultimately was able to make the purchase. Vin number is 12487 if anyone has any info. Thanks.
