Williams, Manor and Force India will attempt to complete the season with four engines rather than five to save on the amount they have to pay Mercedes. (Auto Motor und Sport - in German)

Where does it say 'engine saving mode' in the above quote? I read it as 'if the motor is reliable, we won't change it and that might save us some money.'

I found it today on the BBC website, in the Sport section. Click for F1.

I also don't see such an article.

I believe I remember that MAMG has before the season started announced that they aim to go through on 4 engines anyhow.

I was a bit puzzled as I thought that if you have that luxury you abandon some power. So what this rather tells me is that efficiency is so much more important than squeezing out power that there isn't much use in 'turning it up' these days.
I guess the rev-limit (due to fuel flow limit) explains that.

I doubt they are broke. I even doubt they have an agreement that makes them pay per motor. They surely have an agreement that supplies them with motors for the season. Otherwise all Renault teams would have been broke. And McLaren would have ceased to exist after pre-season testing 2015.

Yes, I was looking under the new stuff, that article is a week old :)
Nonetheless it proves me wrong and wrong.
Merc customers are said to save 1.5 million USD for the 5th engine.
MAMG is aiming for 4 to have a fresh one in petto in case Ferrari is giving the trouble later on in the season.

Renault is said to aim at 4 because that will permit them to bring a new engine with 35hp extra to Canada, where hp is the only accepted currency.

    Interesting stuff.
