I suspect to folks who live on the coasts it looks cheap. I would guess that it has something to do with all the wide open spaces to build houses outside of downtown Dallas. In more built up and established places like University Park and Highland Park, things can get very expensive. That'd be a good topic for the Texas section of F-chat! T
DFW needs as many Ferrari enthusiasts as it can get! When I was in the Rio Grande Valley (bottom of Texas) a bunch of winters ago, there were a lot of Canadians there...T
I guess its sort of like areas of Phoenix, lots of desert land to build on. I'm intrigued, I like BBQ and Mexican foods, Tex-Mex, etc. Lasagna mood and also feel like pizza. Inviting my younger brother over so we can do the family special at the restaurant up the road from me. the number 2 family special http://rendezvousmtlehman.com/menu.pdf
Surprised I didn't see this earlier. Smoked salmon is great and one of my favorites. You can make a filet yourself if you want to wait a couple of days. Sugar (brown maybe), salt, tequila (or brandy but the tequila has a fresher taste imo) and dill or tarragon. I'll get the exact recipe when I speak to my father. I suggest putting some weight on top of it while it "cooks" in the fridge. Tonight was chicken burgers. Ground chicken, sundried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, an egg and goat cheese.
Mmm. The wife and I love Greek food. I've never tried making it at home, but every time we go to Chicago we hit up this place in Greek-town http://www.roditys.com Family style joint. Good food. Love drinking retsina and enjoying saganaki. Tonight was prime cap steak (from Costco), rice, sauteed mushrooms and steamed broccoli. Mushrooms tasted fabulous; baby portabella mushrooms from Texas, sauteed in olive oil, a smidgen of butter, & smoked paprika. The rice was an old family recipe from my Uncle Ben! 😉 (I had a coupon for a free box) Topped off with a really nice Barbera de Asti that the wife picked up at Costco. Steak got the seal of approval of this little food critic! T
Looks like the Chicago Greeks are like ours and also have pasta on the menu. I like Greek dishes. But usually on take out we do Italian. The best Greek/Italian is about 40 minutes drive. I grew up within their delivery range. Been going to them since 1979. My family knows the family very well. We had another one near my grand parents, but the owners retired and its now a Korean BBQ. We knew them well enough to get invited to their daughters weddings. Home ? Alfa Greco Roman Cuisine I actually know a few Greek families. Dinner at their homes is awesome. The smoked salmon recipe will come in handy. Salmon season is coming up soon and I'll be stocking up. Had an actual smoker. But a uncle borrowed it and never returned it.
The nice thing about the family special. Two even big guys can't eat it all. So I have a whole left over lasagna for dinner tonight.
I stopped by a local Greek restaurant that is not only very close, less than three blocks from the house, but had received rave reviews from family friends regarding their Gyro's and a few weeks ago I was craving a Gyro of quality. Also I have not had a quality Falafel in decades and I know that both can be had at a few Greek/Mediterranean style restaurants. Said restaurant is also directly across the street (within 100yrds) from a huge research facility full of the "good old boy" mentality. The reason I brought that fact into light was because....drum roll....the restaurant took both the Gyro and Falafel off their menu!! Such a shame.
Way to edit out the ambiguous "I didn't" reply and ego insult. And there was nothing passive aggressive in his post. He directly asked you a question. That's not passive. Mark
Is that the place you mentioned previously that did a Greek lasagna? It's homemade mini pizzas. Kroger mini pizza dough + Paul Newman pasta sauce (meh m, mother in law bought it) + mozz. Bake for about 10 mins. It's OK, with enough hot sauce on it, especially now that I'm into my third glass of wine (yes, it was one of those days at work!). Took about 5 mins of prep, so that's a plus. T
Yep, they did a common Greek version of lasagna. Its a heart attack on a plate. The other place that they retired and closed. They basically make the same lasagna, as does the place I ate last night. I swear Greek restaurant owners here went to the same cooking school.
That place does an eclectic mix of dishes. I see avgolemono soup. Mmmmm. Love that. Tried making it once...T

Nice spread of food. The last one looks sort of like the clubhouse a restaurant here made. I crave their clubhouses. But the darn owners changed to another franchise and the food isn't as good. Went from real turkey and good cheese to deli and processed cheese slice.
That was actually at the hotel bar/restaurant before I left and was surprisingly good. I too though have a local place that I swear makes the best club sandwich and will never be matched. Fortunately it hasn't changed over the years.
Dammit Andrew, I've already had dinner and you had to go and post those photos. Now I want to eat again.
Sorry! Mahi Mahi. They weren't spectacular but whenever I'm near water I try to eat as much seafood as possible.
Seafood availability might be why I find outside of Asian restaurants, Vancouver's food scene rather boring. Even the nice hotels, they have good food, but everyone's menu is pretty much the same. Like very little difference between the 3 star Mich Market restaurant inside the Shangri La hotel compared to The Four Seasons YEW or even the Hotel Vancouver's Notch8 or Delta Hotels forget their restaurants name. Its all local sourced ingredients, etc. Although if its sandwiches visitors are after, I usually take visitors to afternoon tea at either the Hotel Vancouver, or do a weekend trip and do the tea at either the Empress Hotel or Butchart Gardens.
