After listening to everyone here discussing car insurance, it's my time to evaluate my 15 year allegiance with Hagerty. I just spoke to them about my up coming policy and received "That's Our Price" and if you want a lower policy we can increase your deductibles. Wrong answer! I have 6 cars insured with Hagerty and during y 15 years with them, I have had no claims, and clean driving records. Any recommendations? 1985 308 GTS, 1968 Shelby GT500, 1977 Cobra II, 2- Supercharged 1963 Studebaker Avanti's, 1988 Avanti Convetable
Had them for my Porsche 928 before I got the ferrari. Found them to be very tough to deal with, and they pulled some shady stuff (later rectified) when I sold the car and informed them to cancel coverage. Had nothing but good experiences with Grundy. They asked what "agreed" amount I wanted on the car, said no problem, asked my planned annual mileage without asking the current mileage, then quoted me about 20% lower than Hagerty.
I called Hagerty once when bought 2nd ferrari. They were only willing to insure me if I never used the cars. They only want you to drive to car shows. I told them I wanted to drive once a week and they said they would not insure me. I have no tickets and no insurance company has ever had to pay out for me. So it seems like their business model is to only insure cars that mostly never get used.
Pretty much every other collector car insurer is cheaper than Hagerty. American Modern was about 1/2 when I checked them, as was Grundy.
Contact Adam through the national Corvette museum. They are great and cover any type of collectible car. Very easy to deal with and great policy prices. NCM Insurance | Corvette Insurance | Collector Vehicle Insurance | HPDE Insurance |
Coverage for specialty cars is more difficult to get in Canada than in the US, but I switched to Hagerty last year for my 1984 308 - and my coverage includes everything you say they wouldn't provide! I have general pleasure coverage, the only restriction is the car is not to be used for regular commuting to work. However, I am allowed to use for commuting 20 times per year. No restrictions on mileage or car shows only, if I want to go for a drive in the mountains, drive my wife to dinner, go grocery shopping, no problem at all. Agreed value was easy.
I think you must have Hagerty confused with another company or they have changed since you had them. I have insurance thru them one both of my collector cars with no restrictions on how often or where I drive the car, I just told them about 3000 miles a year and the amount of coverage I wanted on the car and we were done. I have a zero deductible policy with roadside assistance and have been very happy with Hagerty, they seem to know our emotional attachment to our cars too, the one time I had to use roadside assistance I was very pleased with the quick and knowledgeable response I got. My story sounds just like yours. Had both the 308 and 328 insured with Hagerty for the last 10 years or so, never put in a claim. I was getting prices for the new valuations since the cars had increased in value and found Grundy was 1/2 the price. I even gave Hagarty an opportunity to tell me why they were double the cost and if they could match Grundy's price? The guy sounded like Porky Pig stuttering how much better they were,( even though he could not find a difference in the policy coverages.) Basically saying our price is our price. So Grundy has my cars now.
If you happen to be a USAA member, they have an affiliation with American Collectors Insurance, which did an agreed value on my 308 for 1/2 what Hagerty quoted me, and I can drive it 2500 miles/year. Also, I've heard others here speak highly of Grundy.
American Modern if you don't mind setting mileage limitations. Grundy if you don't want mileage restrictions. I found American Modern to be the least expensive on my 4 cars by about $400 with identical coverage limits and 0 deductibles. However you do have to place mileage restrictions and provide odometer readings. Had more usage allocated towards the 308 and 355 and less on the Alfas. I stayed with Grundy just because we had some family illness stuff going on, the policy was up, and I didn't have time to play around with submitting the pics etc of each of the cars. I asked Grundy to match pricing but they were a no go on that. I will probably switch to American Modern next year as I don't mind setting the mileage limitation. They break out mileage at 1k, 3k, and 5k. Chubb is also worth looking at though not available in my area. USAA's affiliate failed to provide a quote though I am getting their marketing emails. American Modern underwrites Heacock. Philadelphia Imdemnity underwrites Grundy.
Is everyone getting the Agreed or Guaranteed Value they requested? I just received a quote from American Modern Home for a pristine Alfa Romeo GTV-6 Maratona but they wouldn't agree to $30K (at least not without an appraisal). Checked with Hagerty and that amount is not a problem but the premium is 2X as much...
Give Chubb a call. I have my 328GTB and three other collector cars insured with them at agreed values with no appraisals. They have competitive premiums (much cheaper than Hagerty in my case). They also have a stellar reputation for paying claims.
American Modern is definitely the cheapest but tough on agreed value determination . Grundy on the other hand is very reasonable and generous with agreed values.
I have to say that my experience with Hagerty has been great, though I must concede that I've not shopped around for a lesser rate. A few years back I bought a Series 2 Esprit from a dealer in San Francisco. The trucking company I hired to ship it, Magic Carpet Somethingorother, claimed to be bonded, insured, etc., but I insured it with Hagerty for the piece of mind. Figuring I was going to put a bit of cash into it, I insured it for fifty five hundred more than I paid for it. Getting on to the point of the story... The trucking company managed to catch the car above mine on fire, writing off three cars including my Lotus. They then refused to pay up. Never having received a premium payment from me, Hagerty wrote me a check, and then went after the trucking company. It was the quickest $5500 I've ever made, but I still regret the loss of the car...
Grundy was my best choice, saved me 50% from Hagerty. I have to mention that I collect and possibly show with limited driving, but for me it was the way to go.
I too was hit with a $400 increase in premium by Hagerty. Shopping around and so far Grundy is almost half but need to switch other vehicles as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just to be specific, since my Hagerty renewal came in the mail yesterday - My 308 GTS QV is insured for agreed value of $75K, $100 deductible, and my Hagerty renewal premium is $600 CAD/yr, or just under $500 USD/yr. Are you Grundy insured members really getting full coverage for $250/yr?
Just thought I would put up what I pay in the UK 100K pounds agreed value Breakdown recovery included Track days included and few others small extras included Unlimited mileage, all for £350 what's that in dollars?? Can't be that much That with classic line insurance
I have my 328 insured through Condon Skelly for $100k agreed value and my annual premium is $358.04. The only usage restriction is that I can't use it as my regular-use car. Hagerty quoted me almost 4 times higher ($1200+) premium for the same dollar limits but only driving the car to car shows. What a joke!
