While I certainly understand your thinking, I don't think they can put the genie back in the bottle.

FWIW (nothing of course) I'm pretty much with Charlie on this one; limit the radio to 'safety' type messages rather than 'coaching' is ok with me.

As for telemetry, I have no problem with the guys on the wall seeing what's going on. But the ban on two-way telemetry should stay.

Also, radio communications are well known to be unwanted distraction when driving.

How did Hulkenberg know to slow in the pit in-road in China if communication wasn't relayed ?; A violation.

One way radio; now there's a good idea.

 

Idea::

The teams get to communicate in one direction only.
The teams get to choose if the direction is driver to pit or pit to driver.

 

Coded messages can be used on pitboards not just radio.

Just go open radio, these cars are soo complex they really need it. Let the drivers driver and the team watch the car.

 

My initial thought was 'that's a silly idea!'......

Then I thought a little more, & kinda like it!.....

Let each of them decide which they'd prefer, but they can't have it all. It'd certainly be interesting to see who chose which approach.

That was my vote too. Except, again, I'm with Charlie; driver coaching shouldn't be allowed.

If the cars are too complex for drivers to monitor them themselves, it's a sure indication that technology is gone too far in my book.

 

I say go back to the old school racing... And lack of 400 engineers.

F1 is supposed to be state of the art technology and radio was invented 100 years ago. I say free radio communications. The driver can get advice from the engineers in the same way that engineers get input about the car from the drivers.

They can use (and I´m sure they´re using) any kind of coded communications anyway, so if they still want to ban it, they should ban it totally. They can use flags and lights on the dashboard for dangerous situations and if the engine is about to blow and the driver can´t figure it out through his steering wheel display, hey, bad luck.

The issue about radio is not only about giving information on engineering matters, but about the coaching and the tactics being intimated through it.

I don't have a problem with a team informing their driver about damages or anomalies developing on the car during the race, or instructing him to pit.

But I don't think the radio should be used to tell a driver how to drive, the tactics of his competitors, who to let by or who to block, or when to crawl on his way to the pit lane.

 

The vote is split a lot more evenly than I thought it'd be.

No problem for me. In any team sport the coach tells the players how to play.

 

Before radio communications became common in F1 (and motor racing in general), drivers used to figure out for themselves how to drive according to the circumstances, and which tactics to adopt. That was part of being an accomplished driver in Grand Prix.

Are you telling me that the new generation of drivers is less skilled than their predecessors ?

I don't know much about team sports, so I have no idea of the influence the coach has during a game, but surely he isn't in radio contact with the players, is he?
