I would love to interject where I feel you are wrong, but knowing how these threads go, I'll just do the gentlemanly thing, left coast brain and all, and bow out.

I dunno, if she has a great emotional attachment to the model I think it's cool of him to do that for her. For that matter, it would be kind of fun to show up a upscale events in a pristine ****box and hand the keys to the valet with the admonition to not mark the fine '70s AMC finish. :)

AFAIC, the make and model are irrelevant. It's all about whether or not the OP had a legitimate complaint against a company which he went out of his way to avoid buying from.

For $8500 you can jack up the radiator cap and slide a new Gremlin under it.

The CNC repair cost quote of $6,500 - $8,500 is an obvious way to tell the OP to go away. When I was in business and didn't want to deal with the guy any more, just quoted double or triple or what ever outrageous price and usually all but the most dense folks would go away and thought they got a real good deal elsewhere. Since the guy was a real jerk you weren't worried about your reputation loss as others would realize what a jerk the guy was and consider the source of any negative comments.

Ahh, come on!..... Most entertainment we've had here for a while!

Looks like the OP may have quit, but few things are as much fun as "piling on"....... [Something I even suggested "we" shouldn't do a while back. ;)]

    Cheers,
    Ian

I've never dealt with Cats. Known of them for several years, after noticing them on EBay. Took note because they are in my area, sort of. I'm near them frequently, as I go to Everett a lot.

I know the owners of a few dealers in Canada. Its an you can't please everyone business. One took a crummy old Cadillac on trade. Clean car, just old. Blew it out for $4k. The guy who bought it wife demanded my friend repaint the front end to repair all the chips. Her attitude was we bought a Cadillac not a Yugo. She even made the comment her Daddy owned a Cadillac dealership and when you sell them, you give royal service. My friend gave them back the money and tore up the contract. He had 15 Rolls Royce's in his inventory. Didn't need to sell a $4k Cadillac! Another friend had a 1979 BMW 3 series, it was clean but a very cheap car. He paid $800 for it. Sold it for $2,200 and did everything needed to pass the government safety inspection. 2 years later the buyer came back demanding my friend pay his bill for a new alternator.

Point dealers shouldn't sell cheap old cars period. They are not worth the aggravations! Having said that. Cats handled it better then I would have! Fact is Cats didn't even sell him the car. It be like me buying a car and trying to blame the previous owner to the guy I bought the car from!

Spot on. Because of that large dealerships generally wholesale any potential problem cars, especially if there is an expensive safety-related or drivetrain issue.

We do check out each used car we do offer for sale, and for the cheaper ones we retail we carefully explain that this is an older and/or higher mileage car; It is likely not everything will work and that is why its price is so much less than an equivalent new vehicle. Then we have them read, and finally have them sign the document for the vehicle that states "Sold as is, nothing promised". And they are welcome to take it to their own mechanic for an independent inspection. There is a reason you cannot buy extended warranties for those cars! Yet after all that a few will come back months later saying that something isn't working right, or something broke, you need to fix it or else....!

It's another reason that even though I am in the car business and certainly know how to sell cars, I always trade in my cars! I don't want to deal with someone coming back to me months or a year later complaining about something on my old car.

"Folks, if you want something that has the least probability of failure and is covered by a full warranty, step right over here to our new car lot. You get what you pay for!"
