I don't know why the nationality of the driver is so important. Apart from a commercial point of view maybe. As for a "non-threatening" #2, this has to be made crystal-clear when offering the drive. Irvine and Barichello accepted the role, they maybe more, but don't expect Verstappen to do that!
Because the Germans have a reputation for being very organised, very analytical, very focussed, with a cool temperament, and tend to be less emotional about things when they're up against it. (If you do a search of the stereotypical traits of the various nations then it should be quite obvious really!)
