Yes, because the overtaking driver cannot just ram into the car in front. And most definitely LH was well behind when Nico started to block and there was no double movement, he stuck to his line the whole time.

Before rules 27.6 & 27.7 there is surely a rule that says the onus on safely passing is by the overtaker.

The overtaker, just like you and I when we drive along the road, can see where the car in front is going. If you decide to aim your car where the gap is disappearing then you have to expect drama and you are taking a risk.

Why didn't LH suddenly switch to the other side? If he had, then Nico could not have blocked as that would have been a second or double movement, and such was his speed advantage he would have got passed.

LH made a mistake due to impatience. All the cards were/are in Nico's hands. If Nico AND LH don't score points, it is to Nico's advantage.

Sporting Regulation 27.7 applies to defending on a straight ... no ambiguity there! Further, a change of direction several times is not the "only" thing disallowed. What's also expressly disallowed, is using the full track width, on a single move, if someone's wing is alongside your rear tire. You can't run someone off, even in a single move, if his wing is alongside your rear tire. Full stop. Zero ambiguity.

Hamilton may have been pissed ... or, he may have been reacting to Rosberg's rain light (wrong mode selected by Rosberg), as explained in the video posted earlier (post #50). No matter ... Hamilton moved on a gap, and got himself legally alongside, when Nico tried to illegally shut the door completely. The person being overtaken has a responsibility as well as the person overtaking; namely, to not use the full track width to block when the overtaker is alongside.

 

Just to be clear ...

In this hypothetical : Rosberg is on the full left side of track. Hamilton is behind, but on the full right side of the track. Rosberg starts to move right, to block. By the time Rosberg gets over to the right side, Hamilton is fully alongside ... front tire to front tire. BUT ... because Rosberg "started" his move while Hamilton was behind, Rosberg is allowed to run Hamilton off the track.

That's what you're saying; you've just agreed to this. And it's complete nonsense.

Further ... Hamilton wasn't acting impatiently. Hamilton was reacting to the rain light flashing on Rosberg's car, indicating that Rosberg had selected the wrong (regenerative) mode. Hamilton saw a gap, and legally positioned himself in it. Rosberg illegally closed the door, while Hamilton was legally alongside.

 

Believe me, I'm quite happy not seeing his BS.

It's such complete & utter nonsense 90% of the time it makes my blood boil!

I know it shouldn't, it's only F1 after all, but it does.

I'm open to pretty much all different opinions - A major reason we choose to come here & BS about it, but again, FFS!

To purport to move all the way across the track when your car is harvesting energy is just irresponsible. You know you're gonna be slow why risk a crash?

The incident concerned started when Car 6 dropped into an incorrect power mode, as set by the driver prior to the start.
This created a significant power differential between Car 6 and Car 44 at the exit of Turn 3 coming onto the straight, resulting in as much as a 17kph speed difference between the two cars on the straight.
Car 6 moved to the right to defend his position, as is his right under Art 27.7 of the Sporting regulations. Simultaneously Car 44 as the significantly faster car with, at that time, apparent space on the inside, moved to make the pass. Art 27.7 requires the leading driver to leave room, if there is a "significant portion" of the car attempting to pass alongside.
Car 44 had a portion of his front wing inside Car 6 small fractions of a second prior to Car 44 having to leave the right side of the track to avoid an initial collision, which may have led him to believe he had the right to space on the right. Once on the grass on the side of the track Car 44 was no longer in control of the situation.
Having heard extensively from both drivers and from the team, the Stewards determined that Car 6 had the right to make the manoeuvre that he did and that Car 44's attempt to overtake was reasonable, and that the convergence of events led neither dri ...

It clearly says that Rosberg wasn't at fault :

So, who appointed you the expert to say that "Nico tried to illegally shut the door completely." ?


I also have my opinion as to who was at fault, but I am not a FIA steward, so my opinion - just like yours- is that of a layman.

Who said you were not allowed to close the door such that you effectively run the other driver off the track? Webber did it brilliantly to Vettel at Silverstone a few years ago.

This is the reason why I think Hamilton was being stupid; he could have switched to the other side, but tried to force his way through, going in the grass, knowing that the gap was shrinking.
I call that being bloody minded. And on the FIRST lap, against his TEAM MATE !!

 

If you look at Nic's helmet, he's forcing it down in the restraints looking into the car, causing a sloppy exit with the car pointed too far to the right. His steering wheel makes a gentle left correction that is maintained down the rest of the straight. There is no right hand steering wheel input beyond his poor corner exit direction towards the inside of the track. When a car loses power, its natural for a driver to go to the inside. on the straight after.

Hamilton should of gone to the outside.

 

Nico has already said that he moved to the right to block Lewis....

 

Then why in Hades didn't Lewis just go to the left? You can see the same block move made right behind the pair, with the passing driver cutting left after the car in front goes right. Those two didn't crash and they weren't teammates!

 

not sure who it was but another driver did exactly that in the same corner, just doubled back to go around the outside.

Hamilton is a ****ing idiot at times. And he very much proved that again yesterday.

Looks like it was Sainz on a slow Vettel. Vettel chopped over hard.

 

What second move? You are just making stuff up now. He made one blocking move towards the edge of the track. Lewis was side by side for a fraction of a second before he was on the grass and out of control.

Had Lewis been side by side earlier then he would of had a case that he was driven off the track. Not 1/2 sec on the line before losing control.

That example happens every single race. Usually at the start of the GP as well as down the main straight when drivers are trying to block DRS overtakes. They always use the whole track to block and they had to change the rule recently so they had to give 1 car width when returning on the corner.

 

At least some British journalists are not sycophant and say what most people think.

Throwing away a good chance of winning a GP, or at least of achieveing a 1-2 for his team, after a couple of corners just in a rush to make a point by overtaking Rosberg was absolutely daft.

Hamilton forgot the adage "To finish first, first you have to finish".

 

Lewis said that as they came off turn 3 he had a big speed advantage and saw that Nico was slightly to the right of the racing line ,but the gap on the right side of Nico was still much bigger than on the left side so he went for that ...unfortunately Nico moved to the right to block him in a much slower car.
