FYI...another 400iA that came from an estate sale. It was originally bought on Ebay over a year ago (I think) Ashman probably has the price and date ;) When delivered wasn't really as presented and went to the local independent for service. The needs list grew and grew and grew...I don't think the owner ever got to drive it as he got too sick... Having seen the car up closed and underneath it and it needed a lot of TLC.. body and paint were average and frame had some rust on the front cross beam. I believe the shop did a lot of work and ended up selling the car to cover the cost of the job...

Ferrparts says that they have broken a couple of these cars for those who need front turn signal lenses (amber/clear), bumpers, etc..

The three-page invoice at the end of the photo collection, total $19,000, is a good example of how the $25,000 400i in #3 condition can quickly turn into a $45,000 400i in, erm, #3 condition. Possibly leading the owner to conclude the he should have bought a $35,000 #2 car in the first place.

...I agree though I don't think it was a $25k car in the first place....

At this point, is it an $18,000 car?

It would be interesting to find out how much work is still needed to sort out this 400. It is a nice color combination. The other 400's Ferrparts is parting out don't seem as nice but they don't look derelict either. Unfortunately for this series of Ferrari's, the labor rates north of $100/hr relegates owning one of them to individuals that want to repair the cars themselves. I hope this car has found such a home.
I considered bidding on this car as I would deal with future mechanical issues myself. A trip to the mechanic that lasted 2 weeks could cost $10,000 or more just for the labor. I don't pay myself much so that doesn't enter into the equation. What did was the rusted seam between the front fender and the lower valance. At the price it was offered for, body repairs leave too much unknown. There could be frame corrosion also.

There was some minor frame corrosion, nothing terminal though. I think th $19K worth of work made the car roadworthy but still begging for TLC, interior is tired, paint is tired, frame needs work...lots of needs, certainly car for the DYI that has a soft soft for the model (or loves Daft Punk).

had sent them a PM , they called me. The bidder backed out; according to one of the Ferrari parts guys the work was just done. The widow could not pay the bill and made a deal to get it paid and they ended up with the car. Said it needs paint and interior work, do not know mechanically but of course he said it drove nice, Doc

Yes, the work is recent, less than 6 months ago. Nothing close to the Crave 400i 5 Speed in TX...considering the cost to date (original price plus repairs) was $41K and still needs another $15-20K...

Exactly. When the description includes "the seller bought it to part out" is a big red flag.
