Shall I drive my testarossa from Ottawa to Los Angeles?

I am moving to California in July. I am thinking of driving the TR from Ottawa to LA for the driving experience. What do you think?

I can take my time getting there so it won't be stressful. Would value your opinions.

 

That's a trip I'd do in a heartbeat. Especially if you aren't on a time crunch! Oh man, full on blat enjoyment. Go for it!

Living here in the UK, I`d love to do that trip in any car - but in a Testarossa...that`s just what it`s made for

Yes - do it, and bring the cameras for lots of photos of the car and you in front of great landmarks.

If you want to do it, do it I just mapped it and I'm in your flight path (SE of chicago). Let me know should you choose the mission. I'll bring mine out for a bite and some photos!

 

BTW, addendum to my earlier post, if you go through western US, and Canada too I suspect, it'd be advisable to gas up that thirsty V12 every chance you get. Gas stations get far apart out there.

 

Make sure you plan your route to hit Denver and take some extra time to see Colorado and Utah. That's going to be the most exciting area to drive until you hit California, IMO.

 

I like driving over flying. Its fun, you see more. You have more food options. No pesky strangers or noisy bratty kids! Besides its fun to blast down the 101 to LA from Van. Flying is a chore. By the time you get on the plane and take off these days. You've already wasted a few hours of fun in your car!

Yes you should enjoy the road trip. Look us up in LA for the ferrari scene and for mechanics or help. Plugzit is real good with TRs.

 

Ive made that trip a couple of time, though not in a TR. It is well worth the time and experience, especially if you take the scenic route down the 101 in California.
Id suggest protecting the front of your car as suggested. All it takes is one dumb 18 wheeler to throw some rocks.

 

Difficult to do a drive that far without hitting a storm or two (think 'hail').

You will likely hit road repair sections...(think 'gravel').

How many nights are you willing to leave the car in an unattended parking lot while in an unfamiliar area that may be 'questionable'?

At a minimum, carry extra Halon.

Make sure your front wheel bearings have been recently greased. Ensure that your cv boots are in PERFECT shape. Get fresh brake fluid and an inspection to help ensure that pads won't stick.

If you can afford the time and cost of a mid-trip 'issue', then go for it. You may get stuck in a hick town waiting for a transport vehicle.

Personally, I would not do it. I would fret all the way. My old F250 with a camper on back is way more fun on a long road trip.

If you do it.... Document the trip, it will make a great read.

hmmmm, an 87 testa needing repair in a hick town at midnight. that does put a damper on the perspective.............

I drove my 308 from Vancouver to Monterey and back with zero issues. Logged 2263 miles (3642 KM) and got an average of 15.4 MPG. Worst nail-biting moment was being stuck in rush hour traffic on the I-680 in San Hose (100*F mid-afternoon temp)... No overheating at all.

If a clunky old carb 308 could handle all of that, a TR won't break a sweat.

 

Sounds like a trip of a life time, go for it.

Also thank you Wade for suggesting the windshield protection shield. I didn't know there was one for cars. I will certainly get that put on before I embark on the trip.
