I think you've taken my note out of context - or I wrote it poorly... probably me.

Vettel did have the best car for at least 2 seasons where the competition was from his own team mate ... but then the other years - it was up to him. And don't forget that Vettel was an outright winner at STR... verses - Hamilton who has only had "top flight teams" - McLaren and Mercedes... both at one time...

Senna on the other hand - did well in much lesser cars - Toleman.... and Lotus. MY respect for Senna is much deeper for his Lotus years vs. McLaren. He became a "dirty" driver with McLaren and fighting Prost.

when he was at Lotus - that was pure Genius at work.... Sadly Hamilton has NEVER shown that, and at Least Vettel once.

going back to the stats... there is no way to compare the skill and level of drivers today vs. the ones in the 80's... I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the drivers of the 80s were much more well rounded than those of today. Namely - you had to survive back then - actually physically survive a race ...

The guys in F1 up through to the 90's had to be prepared to die for their sport, if you put rapper-cum-fashion model-cum- race driver Elton in the same position, he'd mess his pants and never take the wheel.

He isn't a rough tough hero driver, he's a privileged top team driver with the best equipment more often than not and the knowledge that the safety of cars and circuits has evolved to a point where his lack of respect for rules and others cars in his bumper car antics almost certainly won't be punished in anything more physical than a spanking from uncle toto behind closed doors.

Given the average wage/wealth of most decent or top F1 pilots - 'Hero' should never come into play. They are not hero's. Lets reserve that for those actually saving lives and putting their life on the line in service to others, for anything but overt glory, fame or celebrity. No one driving in F1 is a hero. Those who treated and saved MS are as an example.

People have many definitions of heroes, so in the F1 arena, people would call schumi, Senna etc their 'heroes'.

I agree that there are other professions and groups of people more deserving of the true definition of the word, but that's the beauty of the English language, it's meaning can be manipulated to suit and the same words used in many many ways

Back when I was a small child, Adam West's Batman was my 'hero', and he didn't exist. If we were all the same, and idolised the same people, or reserved our communication in words to only the true definitions of those words, I think the world would be a less interesting place. Our interpretation of others heroes, villains, idols, celebrity, amongst other things helps us to understand many things about others and ourselves (although me and toil will likely never see eye to eye on anything hehehe).

I mean, toil would say I'm a tool, but you cannot use me to saw things in half, nor put up a shelf, so I can't really be a 'tool', but we all know what he means if he were to say that, and in most of us, it raises a smile and paints a picture.

A hero driver to me isn't one whose car comes complete with flashing lights and rocket launchers for the day job as a marine, it is simply a driver who overcomes odds against him to win races, like Senna, schumi and others were able to, week in week out. Guys who put their lives on the line every weekend and actually out drove his equipment, grabbing a race by the scruff of the neck and beating the rest. Alonso is the only driver to have shown this type of driving of the current crop of drivers, with his performances in a succession of lacklustre Ferrari cars and now in the rubbish-skip with Drs he drives now, when it doesn't go bang

For me, the F1 pilots are technicians and skilled. I can delineate easily between exciting profession and hero. I do understand the use of the word and it is easy to say hero and mean something other than the strict definition. Like saying he is 'great' or hero yes.

    It's called human nature.

Look at any school playground. White kids play with white kids. Asians with Asians. Black with Blacks. Big offices. Same thing. Prison yards. Same thing.

I've been to majority white schools, majority black schools etc and it's always the case. Visited plenty of offices and always noticed the same thing. Haven't been to prison but everyone knows how that is.

Given some of the comments I've read, having switched off the race after the end and not seeing for myself, I did get the impression that the antics had given people the impression there was more to it than just a couple of happy chaps together, and I've always had the impression Elton was either gay or certainly someone who may be a little that way inclined. I haven't any problem with it at all, but I would rather people were honest about things. There have been rumours of course about Elton for years, and a ***** cat doll is the ultimate beard potentially I guess

I can't believe the profanity filter can edit out that word, since it's the band name and in the context used, totally innocent!

Why should anyone care? So what if he is or isn't?

Time to put that part of the debate about Hamilton's skills out to pasture.

I am surprised that living in London that someone wouldn't have known about the facts behind those "rumours," and further, that it appears that Elton has been pretty "honest" about his sexual orientation since 1976.

From Wikipedia - "John, who announced he was bisexual in 1976 and has been openly gay since 1988, entered into a civil partnership with David Furnish on 21 December 2005, and after gay marriage became legal in England, wed Furnish on 21 December 2014. He continues to be a champion for LGBT social movements worldwide and same-sex marriage."

Here's an excerpt from a February 25, 2016 Rolling Stone article posted on RS's website -"Elton John: The ***** at Peace" -

"A call comes in. It's his [Elton's] husband and partner of 23 years, David Furnish, whom the British tabloids and even Elton have nicknamed Yoko for the way he has pushed out much of Elton's longtime inner circle and streamlined matters as de facto manager of Elton John Industries."

So, whether you decide to burn your Elton John records or not (it's up to you, I was never a fan of his anyway), I think we should be getting back to F1......

You know, at my age (I am almost 69) I tend to find most male below 30 rather ... effete these days, so it's difficult for me to make a distinction between those who are gay, and those who aren't.

Elton, I christened him that way back, in reaction to the over-effeminate outfits and questionable fashion he was promoting at the time, and his paddys thrown in and out of the car! Blame me if you like

There are other nicknames hanging around too, but Elton seems kinda poetic if indeed it turns out the rumours are true

If he's gay he won't be the first, and surely not the last (as William said, these days it's hard to figure who is what!!) I honestly dont care about his sexual preferences, nor those of anyone for that matter...i simply dislike the guy, his atittude, arrogance, the fact that he is a lying cheater, and quite frankly i never saw anything outstanding from him(many good races yes, outstanding no)
Ps:Silverstone 2008 was pretty good from him.....
