Anyone have any ideas as to mounting the front license plate on the 308 ? Cops gave me hell for not having a front plate..No fine this time lol Any special brackets out there that allow the plate to be mounted below the very narrow grille ? Thanks
...what are the local requirements? - Size of plate for the front... Are you allowed a smaller plate there? - Specifications for mounting configuration (e.g., how low can it be mounted, is it allowed to be angled up or down, etc.) All these figure into the equation. I was forced by German law to have one mounted when it was imported a few years back. The local shop did a good job (did it at no charge as well because of the other compliance work carried out by them). Simple enough with two small brackets holding a plate-holder. Looks as good as can be expected...
Not sure about Canada, but in the state of Washington you can get a letter of exemption if you can prove that there is no factory option and an aftermarket would damage the vehicle. There was an option for these when they were released, but I don't think any one has ever seen it in the wild and they are not available through the dealer. Might be worth making some calls to the government.
I used a Sto-n-Sho quick-release plate holder. Works great. They don't make one specifically for the 308 so you need to get one that looks like it would work in terms of size and angles. I taped the mounting plate to the underside of the bumper with 3M double-sided tape and can install/remove the plate in about 5 seconds. I only install it when I park on the street as police here don't hassle you about plates but parking patrol does. No drilling and completely reversible. Don't have pics for the 308 install, but here are pics for a similar install on my scud. Dynamic Technology Group It mounts into the tow-eye socket, through the egg-crate grill. Works fantastic, and looks good. Here's some pics. Not very good, but you can get the idea. I was playing with a new toy (drone) at the time. Sid Ooops. Just read their website. It appears that they don't have a mount for the 308 or 328. I have a factory version......(so there IS one!!) It's also pretty easy to take two straps and sandwich them onto the grill bars, to mount without damage. I posted a photo of the one I have, on here somewhere..let me take a new picture...
In MA you need the front plate on there during the yearly inspection-mine's off after that. I twist some wire hangers (don't tell Joan Crawford) onto the front grill to keep in on there-then I throw the whole thing in the trunk in case a cop asks where it is...'it fell off two weeks ago'
Someone was selling an aluminum bracket for 308s a couple years ago. It slid onto the grille and clipped into place. I made one out of wood (softer than the grille so no damage). It is very simple but does the job as front plates are required in MA. If you do a search, you should be able to find another simple option another member came up with that bolts to on using and existing hole or bolt.
I'm willing to louver front plates at no cost to you, freeing up horsepower while destroying the clean lines of the front end
I have seen some brackets for 308 cars, but my solution was nearly free of cost. I well attached my plate to an OEM Ferrari license frame and attached the top holes of the license frame to cross sections of the front grille. I keep it towards the left if you are looking at the car. The plate is quiet, no flapping and you are safe to drive without worrying about Police pulling you over. It works for me. Ps. On the bottom two holes in the plate/frame - I just use a black screw with a nut on the inside. That way, everything is nice and tight. This solution is super simple and works amazingly well. License plate sits well without looking weird or strange.
Good luck with that one. Been there, done that, and was roundly denied. They are granting less and less variances. BUT, in WA state at least, once your car is 30 years old or more you can register it as a classic and that only requires the rear plate. As for a front mount Bob (Chairpilot) used to manufacture clips to mount the front plate but he sadly passed a year or two back. Not sure if anyone ever picked up the plate-clip mantle or not?
Actually talked to the woman who did the approvals. She told me that when someone submitted a request she would call the dealership parts department and see if there was a factory part available. If no, then she would call a reputable parts store and ask if a aftermarket part was available. The trick is making sure the guy answering the phone on the second call understands that "universal fit" doesn't always apply.
I included pics of the car, statements taken right out of the owners manual stating NOT to block the radiator opening, etc.... The only answer I got back was that there is a bracket available, request for variance denied. Several threads on the WA process in the NW section. It's a moot point for me anyway, I licensed it as a classic and now don't even own the car anymore.
Specifically for a 308 you should check out this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328-sponsored-yellow-compass-group/474285-removable-front-license-plate-clip-2.html On the second page I posted pics of the mount that I have. I can easily make another one. I keep my front plate on and off to the passenger side during normal driving and take it off when I arrive at a show or 'cars and coffee' type event. I'm in California and never want to give cops an opportunity to pull me over some something trivial like that.
I realize this will be considered bad news, but there is a Ferrari bracket available. Mounts low. Does not look bad. Holes would not be visible if removed. Leave mine on all the time.
Before the 308 was old enough for collector vehicle plates in WA, I used the bracket for a 308 from Ferrari (part number is in parts book. See License Plates for the details.
