What radar detector do you have and how is it mounted/installed.
None in the 430 Scuderia....I use the Waze app (and good judgement). I do have a V1 hardwired near the rear view mirror in my BMW....also backed up with Waze (and the aforementioned good judgement).
I have V1 in my corvette and infiniti G37 daily driver.... I was thinking of going V1 again, but my friend has a Passport 8500 and I like the idea of having it installed in the car. Arizona has a ton of straight roads with perfect pavement. So using radar detectors makes sense when things get spirited.
I've tried several and I keep going back to the tried and true V1. With the recent firmware updates, it filters out the annoying false alerts caused by the new in-car crash avoidance sensors of other cars. Mine is hard-wired into the fuse box behind the passenger seat so it comes on and off based on the ignition key. I don't like having the thing on the windshield so its mounted on the cabin window behind the passenger seat with a clear view front and back. The remote display is velcro'd to the front of the console. Just one way of doing things... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Passport that I don't use anymore, Valentine in the 360- which works good, is hardwired but to me is big and clunky and I have a Uniden LRD950 which I REALLY like. The Uniden is affordable, competes (in tests) along with Passports and close to the V1, has GPS that will not set off the alarm when going below a preset speed limit such as 30 MPH, and the GPS lets you cancel out known false alerts like K Marts etc. I don't sell radar detectors and have no hidden agenda like Radar Rob (or whatever his name is) that sells radar detectors.
That's and interesting setup! I need to see if my V1 can be updated, I've found it mostly useless on the highway these days due to the constant false alerts.
Bob.. that is awesome.. I never thought to do it like that... I may look into putting the remote V1 in the mirror or maybe where the switches are the cabin light.
Same thing for me, Mike. The thing was going off constantly on the highway. Since the firmware change, its quiet except when needed. I plugged in the serial number and it said an update was available. Took 1 week turn around time. G.P. Absolutely on the radar-mirror. com folks. Had that in my Carrera, worked like a charm. Id do it in the 430 , just been a bit hesitant about running the cable up to the mirror. Used 360/430 mirrors are cheap, $75, so you could get one of them, send it in and still have the original when you sell. At least that was my thoughts. There is a switched fuse in the fuse array behind the passenger seat, i tapped it with one of those double fuse taps so the detector comes on with the ignition. works perfect.
Personally I'm in love with the 9500ci. I put that in all my cars. The GPS keeps out the annoying false alerts, and the laser jammers come in handy. On my F car however I have the beltronics Pro RX75 Plus. It was on there when I bought it. Beltronics is made by the same company, but its the older version without GPS. While I much prefer the 9500ci, not enough for me to tear out the bel and take the time to install it. I know a lot of people swear by the V1, but its never done much for me. Its big, clunky, outdated, and doesn't seem to do anything other companies don't. Their patents all expired like 2 years ago. Even their arrows are used by other the other companies now. I love the GPS though, as well as the hidden installations and laser jamming systems. I've used the jammers since 1998 and haven't gotten a ticket since *knock on wood*. But I know to each their own!
Passport 9500ci in my 430 and in my R8. Originally had the 8500 mounted in my R8 because I didn't want to shell out the cash for the 9500. I got nailed with laser, mandatory court appearance and attorney. Ponied up for the 9500.
Bob- Do you recall where you hardwired the V1? I've sent mine off to be updated and I think I'll run the power the way you have you have yours once I get it back. I have mine mounted high above the rear view mirror so it's out of the way but still visible. Currently, I have the power cord hanging down as it's plugged into the center console.
Mike. Here are a couple pics of the fuse block from my former 360. The 430 is similar. I used a switched fuse behind the passenger seat and a fuse tap. Upper right fuse. Plug the tap in and watch for on/off with the key. There are probably other switched fuses but since i was mounting the detector behind the seat, this one worked for my situation. It is really not an "upgrade" but an exchange program. I don't even think they save the old ones, they probably just crush them. But I'm in the same boat, I have not "upgraded" in 8 or 9 years and would love to get rid of the annoying false alarms from the Mazdas, and Volvos that use laser crash avoidance systems...god I hate them. I had a Mazda following me on Saturday for over a mile...I hate to shut the unit off, cause I inevitably forget to turn it back on. I resolved the K band crash avoidance systems by turning K band off, since it is not used locally by LE. Newer V1s, do have an improved filtering system for that. Okay, I just checked my serial number (and paperwork) I last upgraded in 2002!! But, the upgrades do not look to be that significant....there is some better filtering on K band, and some added features, BUT it does NOTHING to resolve the false laser alerts from vehicle crash avoidance systems. I just called their customer service to confirm this. Their tech says that cars unfortunately use the same laser frequencies that are used by law enforcement, and their is nothing further they can do at this time to rid of these false alerts. He said if you own a Volvo, Mazda, etc and try to use a V1, it will constantly alert! Okay, no further upgrade for me at this time...esp since it will cost $289! For $110 more I could have a second unit, and use the older one in another car or while traveling...
See post #2 . I use it daily...but one needs to understand the limitations. It is not going to give you updates on active laser or radar speed traps unless someone reports it in real time. That means it works best on busy interstates (where I spend most of my time possibly exceeding the speed limit). It is less effective on rural state highways and arterials, simply because the are fewer users to actively input data. It is pretty effective at pointing out photo radar and red light cameras, since those are fixed, and never (rarely) move.
Love my 9500ci. I don't really speed much but it's helpful to know. And it did save my ass once...worth every penny right there.
