Everything is great until you get to the tail lights with eye brows. Great looking car, one of the best in a few years I think.

Funny, I think it looks better from that angle. From the front, the rear looks like some teenager's idea of flaring the rear quarters.

    Hey John,
Have you seen the Mazda in person? In photos it does nothing for me, and that first picture posted looks awful (Taken with a telephoto lens just screws up it's perspective). The winding road side reflection is clever but the surface development of the whole bodyside just feels long, undefined and flabby. It must look better in person.

    And the DB11? Argh!

In all fairness, John, I haven't seen the Mazda in the tin. But since I saw photos some time ago I was taken with the complex yet sensuous surfacing the bodyside has. I gave them kudos for really trying to capture soft surfacing, without all the complexity and lines of many of today's designs.
I'll know better when I actually see the car. ;)

Addendum on the Mazda: these kinds of cars are oftentimes caricatures and flights of fancy to show what's possible, and to get reactions to a new direction.
Last time I checked, Mazda wasn't planning on a V16 or V12, so the extreme dash to axle is a bit over the top, to say the least.
But I'm glad someone is 'spitting on the table' and showing something new. Is this going to be a production car? Not the way it currently looks. But i'm so glad to see some risks being taken to shake things up.
Too many companies are phoning it in and playing it safe. I know why, but it's refreshing to see what else is possible.

    +1

This would be really cool if they shrunk the design and put it on a stretched Miata chassis, maybe with a 2400-2500 mm wheelbase along with a bigger engine. Could be a great RX7-8 replacement. The front does have a little Tesla and it drawns off a few other cars but execution is very good. Other than the tail lights I like it.

I think this Italian based design magazine appreciates that, with the homegrown stuff being so uninspired as of late. Part of that can be blamed on the Sergio’s of the world who get payed millions to pick boring designs :)

I'm guessing they've got plans for this new design language.
Where they use it remains to be seen.
But I appreciate the fact that they're embarking on a new form language, regardless of model

Are concept cars much of a risk for an automotive company? If they're not well-received, they don't have to put something similar into production. Why not just churn out a bunch of different concepts and see what sets the public imagination alight and then use that as a basis for the next generation of production cars?

    All the best,
    Andrew.

not so much risk as a reason for being
some of these one-off vehicles can cost in the millions of $$
so the strategic rationale is useful if there is a desired outcome
garnering public response/reaction is the usual goal, but:

'are we testing the public's reaction?'
'are we showing off a thinly disguised version of a production car we intend to produce?'
'is this a pure research vehicle to showcase our technical prowess?'
'is this a way for our internal design/marketing/engineering teams to flex their creative muscles?'
'are we showcasing our brand in a positive position?'
'are we trying to show who we are & where we're going?'
'are we showing what the future holds?'
    etc., etc., etc.

I love it but I feel by the time they 'dumb it down' to incorporate elements into production cars, it will lose the subtleties that make it special.

Thats always been my problem with concept cars as test beds. What looks great in the extreme, often looks odd and unattractive, once its made producible.

I discovered this guy on the internet. He takes existing pictures of various cars, even as old as a 1956 Bentley Continental, or prewar Delage or Delahaye, and then uses Photoshop or some other program to put humongous wheels on them and lower them. Sounds awful but it seems to me like, on one out of ten, he hits a home run. I really liked it when he redid the nose of the one off Pininfarina Hyperion Phantom dhc two seater because he extended the grille all the way down(probably wouldn't meet bumper laws).

See bottom picture in this story The 2008 Rolls Royce Hyperion - **********.com

I wrote him and he said some of his designs have been built but didn't actually name them.
