No, it's because Ferrari produced an engine that's good but not the best, and their chassis is good but not the best, whilst there is a question mark about their drivers too. They are good, but maybe not at their best anymore. You don't win on past reputation.
Ferrari is lacking some aero towards the Mercedes. Engine difference isn't that big anymore. Chassis is nearly as good as RBR/Mercedes. It's these things that make the Ferrari not as quick. It seems to me that the car can't heat the tires quickly enough in qualifying, which explains the big gap in qualifying but in races we are much closer to Mercedes pace. Nothing wrong with the drivers; Kimi upped his game and Vettel is plenty quick enough, how anyone can doubt this is beyond me. Furthermore...we have lost the Australian GP in part to luck and part to strategy. Same goes for the Spanish GP. Ferrari played it conservative. Who knows what could've happened in Bahrain. According to most people here, Kimi sucks, and he finished just 10 seconds down.
Ferrari have had tire related issues for at least 3 years now. The aero doesnt appear to be optimal. Step forward this year? Slightly. They still are .5+ off Mercedes and a Red Bull is probably almost parity with Ferrari. I rate the Red Bull chassis ahead of Ferrari and slightly better than Mercedes. More power to Red Bull and Ferrari are 3rd behind Mercedes as Red Bull would eclipse both it seems. Hopefully further upgrades will keep Ferrari clear 2nd ahead of Red Bull. I just don't see Ferrari outperforming Mercedes this year.
Yes I agree. All the more reason to focus on 2017. Tough pill to swallow but it's the only one that will actually give them a good chance at a championship in the near future. Can you imagine if they spend all their resources on this year trying to chase Mercedes, obviously lose out on the title, and then again be beaten by a team that did the decent thing and build a good car for 2017?
There are teams already fully devoted to 2017. I give Ferrari 3 more races and I hope they pull back on this effort and get the 2017 effort moving. Diminishing returns etc.
Yep. I'm convinced Mclaren for instance will have a great car next year (if Honda pulls their finger out). Williams should be up there as well, surely they're not putting that many resources into this year? 3 races, max. Hope Ferrari sees sense.
The problem is buddy, we have been hearing about 'next year' and 'next season' for God knows how many years now.
I´ve read that they´re going to build an interim car to test the new tyres this summer, so it seems that they´re pretty serious at that.
A team like Mercedes has plenty of resources to develop their winning car during this season, and still design and build a winning car for the next year. Can Ferrari do that? I doubt it; why? FINANCES !!!
Though not Ferrari but related as I sense Red Bull are starting a touch of a 'charge' forward. I wish this was Ferrari but credit to Red Bull and Renault for working their issues. Red Bull expects bigger engine gains in Canada, Baku
After the previous disastrous years, and the acrimony between the 2 sides, I am really surprised to see Red Bull and Renault still working together.
As for the suggestion Ferrari has already fallen behind a resurgent Red Bull, Arrivabene hit back at that notion, “If it is Red Bull that is Ferrari’s problem, then I just go home now.” Oh dear .....trouble at t' mill ?
It does appear that Ferrari have more than just an issue with Mercedes pace it seems. Canada will yield further data for Arriva to either book his train home or celebrate pace ahead of Red Bull. I hope we have a dry race in Montreal for all teams to assess the order and for us fans to see what that is....
Ferrari have already shot their load. RB, after the monaco engine upgrade (3 tokens) still have 21 in the tank, McLaren have 18. As for the aero development battle, history has proven time and time again that RB are almost always superior to Ferrari in this area. So just from a general probability of more token spend and current RB trajectory, it is highly unlikely Ferrari will be able to hang onto 2nd in the constructor's. Time to concert efforts for 2017 imho. I'm sick of losing, by a yard, by a mile whatever, it's still losing so I'd rather us lose by a mile this season and focus on exploiting the new 2017 regs to win next season.
Ferrari coming to Canada with new upgrades: -Rear suspension to aid rear tire issue -aero upgrades (always at Canada, though) -new shell fuel -turbo upgrade, without spending tokens (to aid reliability). It'll have different vanes so apparently more power is expected
I've seen some saying there are no tokens for the new turbo and some saying it will cost 3 tokens. Don't know which is true. What I've read is there's actually no more power, rather hybrid output currently used to spool up the big turbo won't be needed so will be directed to the drive train. Estimates are ~5 seconds extra output from mgu to the wheels. That would be very useful for attacking to overtake and also to defend.
Sebastian Vettel still believes he has a shot at this year's title despite admitting that the odds are stacked against him.
Canada GP... That elusive "clean weekend" finally came. Positive turbo upgrade on Seb's car. Pits & strategy were spot on. BUT STILL NO WIN... wonk, wonk...
