Thank god most detached houses neighborhoods in Canada are HOA free. I bought a two bedroom condo as my first place. The building was brand new. Once the blue hairs moved in they formed a board and started making up ridiculous rules on the games room, gym and pool. After I vowed no more socialist living!

The worst of meddling incompetence and sacrifice of freedoms. Agreeing to community rules invariably selectively enforced by a bunch of retired nitwits with nothing better to do that screw with people and fine them with monetary penalties.

Even scarier, they have the power to auction your home at no reserve - even if owned free and clear - if you have unpaid fines. Meaning they could sell your $500,000 home for $1,000 to pay their fine for your unkept yard, and you are SOL. Many states have no right of redemption after a foreclosure auction.

In most Western American cities, almost all new developments since 1990 have Home Owner's Associations.

another miserable person hating life. A good lay, a joint, a drink, or a sense of accomplishment goes a long way. In her defense, we don't know what happened before. Chances are there was prior incidents. We all know the Subis have the worst reputation for drivers and are more or less the cause for the modified scene to go away. Entertaining nonetheless

We have a local kid with a VERY noisy 240SX. Literally, we can hear him coming and going from a half mile away, or more. All hours. I asked the local police to have a talk with him, and they acted like it was no big deal.

Thank God I don't have to worry about this.

Why on earth would anybody join an HOA?

I live at the end of an otherwise quiet cul-de-sac (no HOA) and every car we own happens to be loud, especially at start-up. Fortunately for us, the neighbor two houses over is an LEO and his daily driver is a Challenger SRT Hellcat. The other neighbors have never complained about our cars.

The community creates its own 'covenants' for owners. The idea is that everyone maintains their home to a certain standard of lawn care, maintenance and appearance (meaning they need to approve your paints and paint scheme if you're changing anything). So there are no Camaros on cinderblocks, trailers, out of code sheds, home colors, etc. The HOA also can maintain common areas, gardens or neighborhood pools and tennis courts, which admittedly are the best upside to them. So you get these private neighborhoods that have rows of palms at the entry, green walkways, private parks, etc.

The trade-off is that you subject yourself to the will of the HOA board.

If the HOA is 'good' it can be a big plus... raises property values.

You don't have some idiot painting his house 'Bronco Orange with Blue trim'. Dead grass. Cars on blocks, RV with flat tires sitting in the driveway, etc. etc.

The HOA automatically comes with the house if you buy in an area with covenants.

I've seen both extremes where I live: from nit-picking about the size and fonts of house numbers on one hand to ignoring junk left on the sides of garages on the other.

Im in a HOA for the first time. Ive always been terrified of them but i spoke to them at length before signing on. Told them about the Ferrari, dog, more cars than garage can hold so one will always be in the driveway.

We sat and went over the agreement and none of my concerns violated their HOA agreement.

    This one seems pretty mellow.

Zoinks. Someone doubled up on their grumpy pills this morning.

We live in a historic district, so no HOA, but the same deal. Mostly busybody retired biddies who have nothing better to do than tell people what they should/not be doing...T

True story....I installed a nice solid brass bracket on my home here in the city a couple of years ago and started flying an American flag. The next week I got a letter from the HOA saying I had violated the rules and I had to take my flag down. I sent them a certified letter asking them which of their legal team was looking forward to presenting their case to the US Supreme Court since I'd always wanted to go there and was willing to defend any legal action the HOA took all the way there. I was very clear that the next day I was calling the local news, then the League of Women Voters, then all the VFW posts in the county, then the local outlaw motorcycle gang. I let them know my plan was to throw a peaceful protest party with free BBQ for all of those groups, and anyone who brought an American flag, on the public sidewalk in front of their building.
About 2 weeks later I got a new "flag flying" form in the mail that all residents needed to fill out if they planned on flying an American flag.

Now the sad part of that story I if they would have pushed it I would have lost. HOA's have been given almost absolute power in most states.

Yes, but some local lawyer would have taken your case pro bono and it would have cost the HOA thousands.

Until my dying day, I will NEVER ask permission to fly the flag of the great country I am fortunate enough to live in.
