A true race car! Really cool. No garage queen. It will however require a considerable investment to keep it on the road in an appropriate way - Congratulations to the one going for this adventure! david
This looks like a nice old racer doesn't it? What the thinking on price? I'm not sure that Ebay is the place to buy this sort of car but with the current bidding stalled at 70k C it look like good value? Ian
This is always an interesting question as to what constitutes a 348 Challenge car. Ok, it raced in the Challenge racing series. But it's not one of the "factory" Challenge car per se. It actually appears to have very few oem Challenge parts. The seller claims that "This car is a Challenge car built by the dealership with the challenge kit purchased from Ferrari of Italy" but there seems to be very little of the kit remaining on the car, or included with the deal as spare parts. So it's not as if it's a car converted in period to race in the Challenge series using oem Challenge kit and remaining as such to this day (or even retrofitted back to original kit). Perhaps the car had the full kit at one time, but no longer. For example, the oem steering wheel is included but there's no pic and I'd have to assume that it'd be the standard 348 leather wheel and not the Challenge suede wheel. The seats are not Challenge (nor does the seller imply as such) as those were kevlar-carbon fiber and made by OMP, not Sabelt. Also doesn't have Challenge running light covers or tow hooks. It's not possible to see from the pics whether the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals are aftermarket or oem Challenge parts. Lastly, no mention of whether it has Challenge brake ducting - irrespective of whether a better brake ducting system could've been engineered by the racing team. Not denying that it'd be a fun car. Just not sure that it can be called a true "Challenge" car as it currently sits - if what constitutes a true Challenge car can even be defined. I've no dog in the fight as I sold my Challenge car 2 years ago. But I've often wondered why a modern, "high" mileage, well-raced 348 should command a premium price simply because it campaigned in the Challenge series, when the car was nothing more than an ordinary 348Tb from the factory with currently a mix of legacy oem Challenge parts and modern aftermarket parts. All the above crap notwithstanding, it's not as if the car doesn't pique my interest!
I imagine most of the cars that took part in the Ferrari 348 Challenge race series would have been built up at the dealers rather than being supplied by the factory. To compete in the Ferrari 348 Challenge the 1994 regulations state, 'It is obligatory to use the kit of technical equipment supplied by Ferrari.' In terms of 348 Challenge definition there's perhaps 3 options: (and maybe they all apply) 1 The Factory Challenge cars, which may or may not have had the Challenge kit fitted. 2 348's that had the official Ferrari Challenge kit fitted. 3 The cars that competed in the Ferrari 348 Challenge, inc. 348tb/ts GTB/GTS & Factory Challenge. I don't know anything about the Ebay car, just wondering when a 348 Challenge is a 348 Challenge?
The 360CH cars were the first Challenge race cars that were purpose built in the Ferrari factory / at Scaglietti for the Challenge series. The 348 and 355 have all been converted from street cars by adding Challenge parts to get them race ready. The 348CH race cars had received these parts always from the local dealers, which then often also took care of the cars for the races. The only exception to this rule are the few road-going 348 Challenge cars that were built by Ferrari for the North American market as a late edition of the road-going 348, but not as true race cars. These cars have usually not been used in the 348 Challenge. They are nice and rare street legal cars, but are more to be seen as a predecessor of the Challenge stradale, the Scud or the Spec line. A true-bred 348 Challenge race car is therefore a car that has been raced in the 348 Challenge, what can be checked by its serial number. david
Looks like a great candidate to restore, gather up missing items, and celebrate its full race history. Robb
@david, 1A absolutly correct, there is nothing more to say. This is a real good car, it needs only some love ;-)
The car is a true challenge. The car will come with the parts that are on the car also in a crate they will also get the original omp roll cage the ducts for the brakes or taken off also two sets off challenge rims, the challenge steering wheel omp. And the original leather wheel and the one on the car 3 altogether. The car is a true challenge it will also have a omp challenge seat with the challenge writing on the seat. The car interior is as clean as 2year old car all the parts were taken out and keep in a box with up dated stuff in the car they are over 20 years body is emaculate. The sabelt seats are also carbon fiber. Not sold in your standard performance shop. From the owner.
You didn't mention that in your eBay description. It sounds like you have a fine, updated 348 Challenge with its original, taken-off, Challenge gear. Several bidders have recognized that. I'm sure the winner will be pleased with your car.
My understanding is this is not true. The later model 355 Challenges were also purpose built. They came from the factory as Challenge cars and are identified as such.
This. To the seller . . . . You really should update the eBay ad. Because when people commit to buy, or as much as a commitment is worth on eBay, they're committing to the description in the ad listing. One shouldn't assume that an eBay bidder is going to see this FChat thread. Sounds good, but the text of the eBay ad is below: "This car is a Challenge car built by the dealership with the challenge kit purchased from Ferrari of Italy. It raced in the first season by Steve Martel then in the remainder of the 348 era it race by Mike Luili , this is also a street legal car I purchased the car in 95 being the third owner with 11000 km. on it, and have been clubbing it ever since. The original 5 spoke Ferrari rims and tires . This is a great car always serviced at the dealer gear box and engine was refreshed 4 years ago car sound great and drives great." Nowhere in the eBay ad does it mention the oem OMP Challenge seat (1 or 2?). Ad also doesn't mention brake ducting (front and back?) or two sets of oem Speedline wheels (the ad specifically says 1 set, plus the original 348 wheels) With a Challenge car, knowing what Challenge parts are included or not is important. Trying to source these parts is itself a challenge, and not cheap when you find them. I know as I spent 5 years sourcing a pair of seats and mounting hardware, light covers, tow hooks, full roll cage, gas pedal, and the Speedline wheels. I never did find the full oem brake ducting. Not trying to pick on the seller. It's a very interesting car but somewhat vague as to what's truly included. Better wording and/or additional disclosure in the ad, such as a list of the Challenge parts included and quantity would go a long way towards making potential bidders feel more comfortable and likely maximize the selling price. Just sayin'.
Crap if I knew it had all that stuff with it I would have made an offer. Just spent the funds on something else
