Seems like 1 driver had knowledge and experience that helped. Also think having some time in the simulator to get things right and practice trouble-shooting would be on the agenda. Im sure it is.

Toto Wolff has revealed that Nico Rosberg also had issues during the European GP, he was just able to find the solution faster than Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton was frustrated midway through the 51-lap grand prix as he struggled with his engine settings which cost him speed at the Baku circuit.

With his pitwall unable to help him, he told the team: “I might not finish this race as I’m going to change everything

Mercedes responded: “We don’t advise that Lewis.”

The Brit eventually got going and clocked the one of the fastest times of the grand prix.

Motorsport boss Wolff has subsequently revealed that both drivers had the same trouble, Rosberg just figured out the switch change earlier than Hamilton.

He said: “We had a problem on both cars. It was the configuration of some switches. Lewis’s problem came a bit earlier, Nico’s a couple of laps later.

“There was a way of changing the switches on the dashboard, but by regulations we are not allowed to communicate with the drivers. And this caused a bit of confusion and it took a while on Lewis’s car to reset.

“Nico was in a bit more of a fortunate situation as he had done a switch change before, and he just changed it back basically a couple of laps later.

“Lewis was trying to figure out what it was, and it took 12 laps. The power came back but it was too late.”

The Austrian added that Formula 1’s new-for-2016 ban on radio communications did not help the matter.

“The radio rules complicated things drastically: without this, it would have been solved immediately,” he said.

 

Fully agree with this as well - F1 needs more circuits like Baku - Wolff

 

F1 doesn't need more dreary, uninteresting races such as today's though!

Forget the driver challenge, as a race it was dreadful!

 

Cancel half the season then.

 

Of course Toto's going to say that, it's a Mercedes track! Another one like it would just be another easy win in the bag for him! 10 laps into Baku and Mercedes were already 15s up the road...

 

Sounds like a problem for the other teams. Toto makes valid points in the article about the track. Lets cancel Monaco then. The epitome of procession. At least here one can pass.

After the race Rosberg didn't really understand what the fuss was about.

Toto Wollf: "it was just a switch in the wrong position. And declared it was more difficult for Hamilton to spot since he started the race on another mode than Nico. Nico switched modes just before the problem surfaced to the same mode as Hamiltons was in, so he could more easily spot the problem"

After the race Hamilton declared still not being aware were the problem lied and how it was solved.

 

Even compared to the rest of the dreary, boring F1 races that we have in a season, this one came out somewhere near the bottom of the list! - That's not too clever for a brand new track!

 

Which was pretty much what I'd posted earlier!

 

Both Mercs had a problem. Ros was able to figure it out and had a good race. Hammy had a hard time figuring out what the problem was and how to fix it.

No tech assistance from the pits rule effect. Surprised they don't have a code to try and fool the officials. Lol

 

Appears the teams are honoring the rules. Im thinking getting caught would not be worth the trouble after.

 

I missed the race..seemed to be pretty crappy...Elton lost so it wasn't bad at all!!

 

I guess old fashioned pit boards are banned. Really never understood how the driver could read them going ~200 mph.

Amazed they are really following the rules. If you ain't cheatin you ain't trying.

 

Yes and 'cheatin' is trying!! But it appears all are playing nice...for now

 

In Mercs case, having a code is simply going to confuse one of their drivers... No prizes for guessing which one.

Hahaha, I heard one day they put 2 shovels in a corner, and told Elton to take his pick.... He promptly sat there for three hours waiting for someone to bring in a pick and stand it near the shovels for him to take it

 

I watched the entire Baku Grand Prix from start to finish and I missed the race too! - Does anyone know where it was?

As for Lewis Hamilton: I think his car simply lost interest too!

 

Pretty boring race. Ill still keep watching anyway

You need to watch the races more closely - Pit-boards are most definitely not banned in F1!

Listening to Hanilton whine all race was high comedy. Dude youve been in the best car in F1 history for 3 straight years STFU and drive. What if he had a car like Alonso has had to deal with for 2 years? His head might explode

 

Let's be fair here: Alonso has probably made just as many radio messages about his McLaren as Hamilton has about his Mercedes.

It was only a week ago that Alonso was asking his team if he could park the car - Only to be told by the team: "No..........Stay out, others might have problems and we might get some points".

And how about this classic from last season:

"GP2 car!.......GP2 car!.............This is embarrassing!"

 

I don't consider a driver asking his team why his car is significantly down on power "whining."

the "whining" commentary has gotten utterly predicable.

 

Surprisingly a really boring race. I'm disappointed.

Watching Nico drive off and cruise the rest of the way is not exciting.
