I've read just about every post I can find regarding timing belt replacement and I'm ready to get started. 1980 GTSi, 61K. Just need the parts, I'd like to make sure I have everything I need so I'm thinking belts, tensioners, and a water pump (while I'm in there). Cam seals look fine so I think I'll leave those be.

    My question are as follows:
    1) Any other parts I might want to have on hand or replace while I've got things apart?
    2) While I'm sure there are quality parts on eBay I was going to go with superformance or a similar vendor. Any opinions on any belt kits being superior/inferior to others? I don't mind paying for quality and I can't go wrong with OEM parts but I also had to replace the alternator/water pump belt and Ferrari wanted $90 for the same belt made by Gates for $12...other than the label they were identical.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/input

Ricambi, t rutlands or AW Italian are the vendors I use. I do buy parts from superformance from time time but their gaskets are crap in my never humble opinion. I personally do the seals every time as an age issue not a mirage one. If this is the first major under your ownership it's a good idea to check the valve clearance as well do you will know the state of things. Current SKF bearings are not what they were, I recommend hill engineering.

You may consider cam drive bearings and seals. Check the front main seal. Also a good time to check the alternator out, the regulator and capacitor is easy to replace.

+1 On opting for the Hill engineered bearings over the SKF. Maybe $100 more? But money well spent. :)

I would definitely check the valve clearances. Also, re torque the cylinder heads. You need a special tool for that. I always replace the cam seals. If they are 5 years old or older now, they will be 10-12 years old next time the belts are due for replacement.

    Hi Brian,

Don't know where in Colorado you are, but if you are close to the Denver area, you might want to give Maranello Mortorworks a call and see what they would charge to do this service. It would give you a good baseline and they do excellent work. I enjoy working on my car, but for something that can cause so much damage/expense if not done properly it is worth a call. Also, not a bad thing to have it on the service records.

Just another opinion... Many here have done this service themselves and haven't had any problems.

    Safe travels,

    Franny

No special tool to re-torque 2V heads.

Ok, must be QV's only that require the tool.

    Thanks,

The 2V heads are quite a bit wider than the 4V heads which restrict access to the head studs.
