Like so many fellow FChatters, I've been watching the Tool Roll threads for months now, and monitoring eBay for authentic tools/rolls as their prices went through the penthouse roof. I even snagged a couple of tools from eBay, as I started to build up a kit from scratch, since my car, sadly, came without its original tool kit.

Then, one Sunday morning in June, I blew a heater hose, and was rescued by a friend who loaned me a screwdriver and a pair of scissors. There I realized, that for this one simple common roadside repair, the original Ferrari tool roll didn't even have all the tools I needed (no blade to cut off the hose, no mirror to see the split hose)!

So, I decided to put together a modern tool kit, that would actually have everything I needed to make a roadside repair for common things that can reasonably be expected to go wrong when driving a Ferrari....

I decided to go with top quality tools that would actually work (nothing worse than breaking a tool, while trying to fix a broken car), and more or less vintage to my car's era (1988.5 Ferrari 328 GTS)... I included a couple items that will never practically be used roadside (spark plug socket) just because they were included in the original Ferrari kits. Oh, and I included Duct Tape and 20feet of 14AWG wire!

Here's what I came up with, and the actual costs, totaling just north of $800:

What a great idea. I especially like the wire and duct tape rolls, the Leatherman tool and clamping vise, and the mini torch.

The VIN is a nice touch, too, since that makes it less likely the roll will be separated from the matching car.

    Nice job.

Exactly. I have a hard time believing that the tool roll and Manual's are just " forgotten" each time a Ferrari changes hands. This makes it less likely to be seperated for profit.

The cost breakdown is shown in the table. Big ticket items are the Leatherman tools at $280 for the pair. Entire kit would have been $526 without them. Other than that, the tools are all high quality - Snap-on and Craftsman - which are a bit spendy, even though I bought most of the Snap-on wrenches on eBay to get vintage ones (for le$$).

At Ricambi, the replacement tool kit is north of $600 for 8 wrenches, 4 screwdrivers, spark plug socket and a pair of pliers. For the exact equivalent here in Snap-on and Craftsman, total cost would be about $225. That makes this seem like a little better deal, I think.

Finally - with this kit, you can actually fix most anything that's likely to go wrong on the road, and then some. (in over 40 years as a gearhead, I've never needed a spark plug socket roadside.) Ferrari kit lacks even a blade to shorten a hose, when my heater hose blew...

Where did you get the embroidered tool roll? Would love to get one for my car. Thanks.

Many tool rolls are available on eBay, if you search "Tool Roll", or "Ferrari Tool Roll"... Mine came from a seller named cmullinix, who offers custom embroidery service for a nominal fee.

Nice job. I don't even carry the Ferrari tool roll. I'm not sure I could fix anything with them anyway.

    Nice job.
May I suggest combination wrenches, box on one end, open the other, as tight fasteners and open end wrenches usually result in bloodshed for me. I'd also omit the Leatherman tools as a pair of pliers and a pocket knife would make them redundant. They are clever but not up to many automotive tasks.
    Love the customized roll.

Fantastic idea....I couldn't even remove my wheel lugs with the original Ferrari wrench...so add a Gorilla lug wrench bar or small breaker bar with 7/8" socket...next...this can all be done for $100 tops :)

I went down market when I did this. Duct tape, baling wire, cobalt socket set and a few open end wrenches and a $3 tool box.
But I think I will use a sharpie to write the VIN on it..I like that idea!

In all seriousness, this is a great idea Zooomz

    Alberto,
Yes, I agree that the photos you posted show a much closer replica of the original Ferrari tool roll.... but, of course, that was not the point of my project. I wanted to improve on the original (OMG - did he really commit such blasphemy????), to create a tool kit that is actually more useful for the Ferrari driver today. For me, that original replica tool kit STILL wouldn't have had the tools I needed to cut off the split end of the heater hose so I could reattach it and limp home.

    Ross,
I agree with your preference for combination wrenches, with their advantages in knuckle preservation... however, it takes twice as many combination wrenches to get the same number of sizes, so I opted to include sockets and ratchets, to achieve nearly the same result. Oh, and I bought Snap-on open-end wrenches, because they have less reputation for spreading under pressure and slipping off, to skin my knuckles!

    Tinterow,
Nope, Tim isn't kidding - in fact, if you look at my pictures, you can see that my tool roll is made by Custom Leathercraft (CLC) just like the one you linked! The difference is that mine cost $52 because of the Ferrari emblem embroidery, and another $7 for the VIN embroidery, compared to the $12.95 for a generic one. I wanted those Ferrari features, so I was willing to spend the extra $$ for them... But I'd certainly see no problem with saving $47 by getting the generic one!

Mike 996... I love it, but I wish they'd included some sense of scale in that picture, like a ruler or a real prancing horse or something.... How can I tell if that can fit in the trunk of my 328????
