Haha!! Saying that 458trofeo's ears don't work is the same as saying Usain Bolt's legs don't work! It's completely laughable!
I had more than 12,300 miles on my 458 before I traded it in for a 488. Believe me, I know how they both work. The downshifts on the 488 are quicker (particularly the sequential downshifts under hard braking), and produce more braking force. And the downshifting sounds on the 488 are terrific (deep, chuffing and soul satisfying). On the other hand, you do not get the wonderful scream from the 488 that you get in the 458 when you are running up the gears. At higher revs when running up the gears, the 458 gives you more auditory drama; the 488 supplies more total drama simply by accelerating much faster. In the 3000-6000 rev range, the sound of the 488 is terrific, and arguably better than the 458. YMMV.
Tesla for the win Will reach out once we have all cars together and everyone is back in town. Should be fun. Anyone in the LA area have a 991.2 turbo s?
every thread having anything to do with 488's is hijacked by the haters.... i wonder if these were the same guys against the 308 moving to fuel injection
Just find it odd a guy with a car that would get its doors blown off by a 488 considers the 488 engine puny. Bother me? On the contrary, they are high comedy! Keep them coming please
Given that a difference in performance between a 458 and 488 can only be truly experienced on the track, and given a 458 Challenge will destroy a 488 9and a La Ferrari for that matter based on track times at fiorino and others) and cost about 1/2 the price, style and sound would seem to be hyper important. Doubt very few comparing a side by side picture of the 488 and 458 would choose the 488- the vents and the side scallops of the 488 are not Ferrari's best work. And as it relates to sound, I doubt anyone would choose the 488, especially when compared to tuned versions like Trofeos.....
My head is spinning all this 488 sounds great stuff. I personally have only heard a 488 one time. Not great. Not awful. Kind of, meh. But I'm just a schmo. The exhaust sounds Ferraris make are more important to some than others. Just for grins, someone should do a poll and simply ask Ferrari enthusiasts if they like the way a 488 sounds. I bet a 488 owner won't start a poll like this...too risky...IMHO.
Are you serious? I doubt you could find one thread on this forum involving the 488 that doesn't negatively discuss the sound of it. The sound discussion is so overdone that if you came to this forum not knowing what a Ferrari is, you'd conclude it was a speaker.
The question really is......... What stock turbo car sounds better than a 488? Cars: 2013 Ferrari 458 Spider 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab
Mercedes C63 Amg The 488 doesn't sound bad for a turbo. Just not what the people are used to from this brand
Exactly !! It's the best sounding modern turbo period. Does it sound as good as a 458? No but it still sounds really good
RS7 has more overruns pops adn gurgles than my '13 458 spider. Though it's obviously not the same screamer above 6k rpm..
It sounds like you are one of the enthusiasts that doesn't place as high a value on exhaust sounds as some others do :-j Seriously though, a lot of people care a lot (arguably too much) which is why the topic crops up so often.
I have never heard any Turbocharged (from the factory) with good sound, included 488. Some people add turbo on high tuned NA, and they still sound good.
Road Test 488 GTB in Autocar. Ferrari 488 GTB (16℃ / 650 S Spider (27℃ as from 2014) 0-60 mph : 3,0 s / 3,2 s 0-100 mph : 5,9 s /6,3 s 0-150 mph : 13,3 s / 13,9 s 0-170 mph : 18,6 s / 20,3 s 0-180 mph : 22,3 s / 25,1 s Btw, the 488's "puny" engine became Engine of the Year 2016. Has also got best marks and commentaries in every German motor magazine or newspaper I have seen. As the entire car has. Usually those seem to be quite reluctant to praise Italien sports cars... Have some home stuff in mind perhaps? Understood? ;-) For the ones among us who cannot get rid of their doubts. ;-) Results | International Engine of the Year 2016
Mclaren has been faster in this 0-XXX numbers since MP4, but Ferrari sold so many slower-but-more-fun 458, and the Mclaren was being famous as "six figures discount out of low six figures price tag". Looks like now Mclaren is doing better, because Ferrari is shooting it's own foot. During spring-summer 2012-2013 when 458 and 458 spider first delivered, I spotted at least two in a week. This spring to summer, so far I only saw one 488, but two 918-spider already.
0.3 secs. here or there.. who cares.. we are not race drivers and these are not race cars anyhow.. imho exotics have as much to do with aesthetics and sound than infinitesimal increments in performance: it's all about how the car makes you feel. From personal exp. the 488 feels just like a Pcar TTS or a tuned GTR, the only difference is the prancing horse logo on the car. The spine tingling enthusiasm is sadly almost all gone, at least for me. I would even venture to say that deep down I think that several 488 owners coming from a 458 series car are regretting having spent the money, even though mostly out of pure ego they will never admit it, let alone to themselves. I also think that the 488 will cause many to jump ship to another marque. Ferrari pretty much ante up their next v8 mid - engine offering if they want to keep their customers, many of which are true enthusiasts with a purist slant who would rather keep espresso machines in their kitchen.. Trust me: the powers that be are taking notes Just my .02..
A very much predictable reaction! Just ignoring the facts and sticking to some that are not measurable. If it is slower , it is a lamé duck. If it is faster, who cares the figures. If the sound is better at low revs, oh, we miss the sreaming. ...Floating the boat with the tides... Haven't seen 488s yet? Sold out in Europe until next fall... Note: I haven't owned a turbo engine driven sports car so far. Because I did not like their characterstics. The 488 is truly the first one that overcomes lots of disadvantages of a turbo Engine. It's still the same (even better) handilng as the 458. It's, no doubts, much faster. In terms of sound everythinghas been said here. If there is a reduction of "drama " due to the sound at all, it is being overcompensated by the tremendous acceleration and speed the 488 offers.
Actually, quite aware of the facts - which in many situations are not solely based on 'measurable' or tangible elements.. Moreover, I have driven a modded 458, 458S and 488 coupe back to back and even if we did stick to the performance numbers imho the added feeling of torque the 488 offers is precisely not enough to compensate for the lack of sound and imho the unsightly engine and the tentative elements of the chassis' design. Heck, it would need to be supersonic to compensate LOL PS are you a 488 owner and are you coming out of a 458 series cars? Not asking out of arrogance, I am just curious.. again just my .02, very best
