    So, I must be humble and admit that my prior accessment of the 95 was simply not accurate. It's been a praised year and model for a long time and I just was not understanding the true difference.

    Mind you, I love my 98 F1 GTS and this thread is not a "which is better" thread. It is however, a statement that they feel like different cars.

    The 95 is simply a more raw car. Oh, I realize I'm not teaching anyone here. But owning both, driving somewhat back to back, you get a good sense of the differences.

    The 98 is a more refined car and that feels good. The F1 is a true performance blast.

    The 95, just raw yet powerful.

    I think they are ugly, ha ha

    As a matter of fact it looks like they can not even stay on the pavement because of poor handling.

    The only real difference between 95 and later OBD II cars is the post cat O2 sensor. The diagnostic of OBD II are much better as far as tracking down problems as the 95 codes can be very generic. Nothing about misfire; LT fuel trim, etc on a 95. From my perspective the primary advantages of the 95 are dual MAFs, dual ECUs, and the lack of an alarm system. A coil went out on my car a few weeks ago. Never event threw a CEL. The ECUs had no idea something was wrong. Pretty sure an OBD II car would have picked up the cylinders that were out.

    Quite a few more differences but yes, easier to scan/diagnose an OBD2 car. Kind of a double edged sword as you have to deal with potential emissions related cel's as well.

    Yes, OBDII is a great tool. However, one would be surprised the differences in early 95 through the later years. Many, many differences.......

    Yes, but in many (most???) states OBD II emission testing, if required, is plug and play. Non OBD II is a sniff test, that is, you actually have to meet the emissions standards. With OBD II you just need the ECU to tell the inspector everything is working, even if it isn't. Try to get a 95 through emission with follow cats. Not going to happen. With an OBD II car, hollow cats and a couple of O2 extensions or whatever and you just might get by. And from what I've seen, a proper F355 with good cats really isn't a problem for emissions.

    Depends on where you live. No emissions testing for pre obd2 cars in Illinois. (probably the only good thing about this state).

    I've seen a lot of obd2 cars with cats that will pass an emission test when fully warmed up but still may throw cat efficiency cel because of slower light off (unshielded aftermarket headers).

    Not a big deal either way, just saying that while obd2 makes troubleshooting easier it has it's own set of complications.

    Everything from 1976 to 2000 is tested on the dyno for emission
    2000 - up its just a check obd ststus and go
    All emissions must be in place OEM or CARB approved

    You guys are lucky. In CT it 25 years old. After that no tests. Funny, it's only 20 years for classic car plates.

    It's nice in a way to have a rolling smog test. You get to see one part of the cars health. Numbers don't lie. All my cars run super clean and strong.

    The real question is the '95 a rawer, more connected to car than your '98? Is the '98 a more refined car than your '95?

    A 3 pedal car is more involving to drive, but on my best day I can't possibly shift as quickly as the F1 system. I like my '98 F1 because I get to blip the throttle when down shifting. On a drive by wire car the TCU makes the decisions for you.

    I am currently looking for an FF which would be the fourth paddle shifting Ferrari I will have owned. I have a '98 355 GTS F1 and a '04 575m. I bought a '99 360 new and flipped it within a week. The first drive by wire F1 transmission cars were pretty awful IMHO. The '04s and on are a different story.

    Having the alpha and the omega of the 355 world give you your own unique perspective on the differences between the cars. I agree that you have two great cars. Enjoy them. The next step is a 12 cylinder car to fill your stable.
