You need the last word so go for it. As I said you are intentionally trolling here and you know absolutely why. Stop trolling Dave. It's against the rules.
A quick update: Big Daddies seem to be working with the straight pipes....no codes so far 100 miles Still chasing code 1448. I replaced the thermocouple to the Bypass pipe, but the CEL and 1448 came back. Maybe the Probe pictured above was ugly but not the culprit I've now swapped the TCU boxes to see if the code "moves".
Skipp, I can send you a used, green potted TCU to try if you like. Also, have you checked your bypass valve operation to know for certain it is working?
Assuming your bypass is working, that should do it. Codes will move if TCU is bad just like I and Mitch stated prior.
As was mentioned make sure the cappy bypass is functioning .... those vacuum solenoids are known to stick or go bad altogether. And since the cappy fails in the open position, that would cause a P1448 code. Same code as would happen if the bypass was 'wired' open.
Thanks again to those who have been helping. Bypass has been checked and is working fine. Gotta drive to get code again and see if it changes. Indicating faulty TCU
A quick update. First of all the Big Daddies O2 extenders seem to be working. After several hundred miles, I have no cat related codes. The bad news is that I'm still having code 1448 related to the Bypass Valve. I'm at a loss.... I've swapped TCU boxes and thermocouples. The code does not move with those changes, so I believe that eliminates the TCU boxes and TCs. My bypass valve is Capristo. I can see it closing and opening by unplugging the hose at idle (remember it's a fails Open system). It sounds loud when at WOT, so I believe it's opening. I have also manually operated the valve and it seems to be operating smoothly. I'm really frustrated and not sure what else to do. The Capristo valve worked fine with no codes prior to installing the Tubi headers and test pipes. The car is running great other than this code and CEL. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
Skipp, since you have the manual valve option ..... do you get the P1448 when you do not activate the bypass manually?
Goth, My Capristo does not have the manual operation. But sounds like it's working. Unless the test pipes are making everything sound like the BP is opening at WOT. After my last post, I swapped plugs between the Cat TCU and the Bypass TCU without swapping thermocouples just to see what would happen. So, technically you have the wrong plug with the wrong thermocouple.......it's the only combination I had not tried. Same CEL and 1448. I thought I would get a different code with this combination.....but, NO. Would you think it truly is the 1 yr. old Capristo BP valve at this point ? And, would the new Tubi headers and test pipes have anything to do with this code concerning the Bypass Valve ? As I said, the BP was no issue until the headers and test pipe install. Could the BP valve have gotten broken during the install ? Thanks for any insight !!!!!!!
Hey Skipp, as we discussed, the exhaust flow thru the Tubi headers and test pipes does not do to the bypass valve. I think it's time to swap the bypass value and rule that out. Let me know if you want to borrow one and I will send it to you on Tuesday
Sorry, I misunderstood what you said in bold above ..... I though you had that cappy remote option ... The 'bypass' connector from the harness to the cat TCU has a different color end on it than the other two TCU connectors (LH & RH). But you can only see the color difference when you pull the connector out. As others have mentioned ..... make sure the bypass actuates with ECU control. IT can be done with you watching it and someone else revving the engine in neutral.
I'll give this a try. The reason I purchased the Cappy was because it fails open. At the time I was trying to protect my OEM headers and cats which are now removed. If the Cappy has failed, wouldn't it be in the OPEN position all the time ? If the thermocouple is what's triggering this situation, QUOTE=gothspeed;144905490]Sorry, I misunderstood what you said in bold above ..... I though you had that cappy remote option ... As I advised, the motronics is seeing a voltage from that sdecu output wire that it doesn't like. It could be an actual issue with the bypass or it could be an isolated electrical fault with that output. I have tapped and logged the voltage outputs of all of the sdecu and what I have seen with the bypass output is a starting voltage of .5v and a fully warmed up high of .8v. I monitored this while driving and at revs that opened the bypass. It didn't get above .8v while the cat Ecus were at 2.6v. If it was my car I would tap or back probe that signal wire on the bypass connector and watch the voltage readings realtime and see what the motronics is seeing rather than guessing if it's right or not. The bypass connector is grey as in this pic and the cat connectors are black. You can confirm that by looking at the left side and as we discussed make sure you have the correct TC going to the correct motronics connector. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, the cappy would fail in the open position ..... but if the bypass is open when the ECU thinks it should be closed ... it will trigger the P1448. drbob101 posted good information above ..... checking the actual TCU outputs would give excellent insight into what the ECU is seeing. Also .... if there is any interruption of voltage signal from the TCU to the ECU ... it will trigger a code for that respective TCU .... even if the TCU voltage signals are within normal range.
Skipp has moved all the compounds around in such a fashion that the only possibility could be the connector/wires going from the bypass TCU to the Motronic or the issue is real and a problem with his bypass valve. I've offered to loan him an OEM bypass valve to try and also can test his bypass if he wants to sent it to me as I have a vacuum generator. Of course, the vacuum line to the bypass valve and the solenoid should be checked too. Seems as the TC was not the issue even though the damage still warranted a replacement IMO.
Thanks again Guys for your time and input. It's hard to believe such a great automobile has been handicapped with all this bullsh,! I'm really about to deregister the car and take my chances with the cops, etc. Tapping the wires will be left to a professional and I'm ready to just write a check......much easier. I'm a glutton for punishment, but I have already reached my limit and am loosing interest in the hobby in general. No matter how much time and money I spend on this stuff it still fails to work. Not just this car......after eight years of collecting, learning to service, and polishing, I've about gotten my fill. Between all the Government inspections, taxes, and speed inforcement, and the aging systems that fail one-at-time and consecutively I've about had it. I've checked all the usual things that most folks wouldn't even bother to learn how to check. As Dave said above, I've tried every combination of TCU and thermocouple swapping to no avail. Maybe the airpump has a problem, who knows. I have the original bypass which works, but really don't want to swap it and the original solenoid again because it was a total ***** to fit the solinoid in the first place. What sucks is it takes another 50 miles each time you try something.....I'm going to enlist the help of the mechanic that did the header install. I'm told he can fix anything. We'll see....... I'm sure if I'm lucky enough to find the solution to this code, there will be another to deal with next month. I have five old cars at the moment and all the time that I should be driving for pleasure is being used to test drive looking for solutions to problems. I really never get to just drive for pleasure anymore. It's ridiculous !!!! I had to take a Xanax to sleep last night to stop thinking about friggin code solutions!!! I'd rather be sitting next to my pool and drinking a nice margarita. Rant over....writing this makes me realize I may need to just move on. Five sweet cars for sale ????? In all seriousness, you guys Dave, Bob & Goth are great and I appreciate what you've done to try to help me. It's just cumulative and I've reached my limit. Thus the sale of my Alfa GTV6 Balocco last month. I was relieved to see it go.
