Missing Relay

Maybe flashing is not on UK spec cars hence no relay

 

Surely if its the owners manual it is an Italian produced book intended for the entire European market which includes a loose English translation

In contrast to Australia & USA to the best of my recollection there are no UK only owners manual

 

On that basis the manual which I think only shows LHD should say something like RHD applicable for UK ! But it doesn't

 

That F relay controls what happens when you pull back on the headlight stalk:

Headlight pods down = relay F sends the signal from pulling the headlight stalk back to the front fog lights (i.e., the fog light bulbs illuminate)

Headlight pods up = relay F sends the signal from pulling the headlight stalk back to the front dipped-beam headlights (so they glow a bit brighter)

There is some weirdness on your 91/74 OM schematic that might indicate that the electrical cable to flash the front fog lights ("daylight flashing") is something that is optional and doesn't come on every car, and if there are no female electrical contacts in the relay panel for the male terminals of the F relay to connect to = would also be a clue that that might be the case.

Questions:

1. Do you have front fog lights?

2. If you do, when you pull back on the headlight stalk with the engine running and the headlight pods down, do they flash?

3. With the engine running and the headlight pods up (low/dipped beams "on") when you pull back on the headlight stalk do the dipped beams flash a bit brighter (or do the high beams flash)?

 

There is no relay fitted to mine as well. I have front fog lights also, it's a 77 yr model. When I pull back on stalk it illuminates the dip beam, pods do not rise and when the lights are on and on dip and pull stalk they shine slightly brighter. I have never figured out this in all the yrs I have owned it. I believe this is standard to all Uk models. The manuals have many differences in and can not be relied on, typical of the era and Italian translations. Even the relays are in different order to manuals

 

No for me in both cases, But then I know that my 79 Euro car (GB) has been rewired. It's something I want to sort out.

 

And do you also have no female terminals at all present in the relay F position of the relay panel?

If no relay F is present, this is exactly how the 91/74 OM schematic indicates that it should work.

 

It should be the schematic you already have as 91/74 should be the print number in the back of your current owners manual

 

Then I'd have to say that you have something else going on (or modified) as the behavior Gavin reported would be the minimum that I would expect (per the 91/74 OM schematic) even if a car didn't have the daylight flashing feature included.

 

No female terminals are present in the relay box holder. They are all like this, from what I have seen over the last 22 yrs of ownership around UK models. I have a very large schematic photocopy of all the wiring. The stalk does have a connection when pulled back to flash dip beam. For it to work correctly it would need wiring to send feed to main beam and also headlight motors to raise when stalked pulled back. I did consider this, but didn't bother as never really needed it and never failed MOT. To get around it just twist stalk and pull down or put a direct feed to front fog lamps
