That is so true. It all comes down to individual taste. And, contrary to what some may argue, the emotion that the car evokes during the driving experience. If a Ferrari doesn't evoke emotion, then it's not worthy of wearing the Scuderia shields. Sans emotion = Porsche.

You need to drive it, to see how it feels, and perhaps most importantly, how it makes YOU feel.

I have had my 488 for 3 months.

I agree with RCorsa as a street car it's better in most ways.
    I like the steering better.
    The ride is better.
    It's faster.
As good looking as my 458.
Sound is different. I like it but not as well as the 458. I think the other positive attributes make up for it.

If I were on the fence I would wait till I was not.

I think the 488 is a better car overall compared to my Italia. It's is a lot faster and the tq difference is immense. I will probably miss the sound of my current 458 if I trade up. Iff you have a coupe, I would definitely go for a 488 spider instead of the gtb.

Ski Bum answered my big question and others sharing their viewpoints and personal experiences added to the information needed to round out my overall thinking. Clearly, only driving a car reveals for each of us, whether it makes the grade or not. I will drive the car, however, I begin biased given I am truly enjoying my 458. Also my modified new C7 Z 06 is faster and (different but just as ) "engaging", and I await a new and my second Cadillac CTS V.

I don't know about you, but when someone calls me and says "do you want a new Ferrari", the "kid" in me jumps up and says YEAH!!!. It takes a bit of time to turn on the new brain, and you guys have helped. Money not being an issue, I need not rationalize, and given competing choices, i.e. 675 LT and Huracan, for example, I am in no rush. This does not mean I won't eventually buy a 488 and certainly criticize no one for choosing otherwise, but not now. Thank you all for your assistance.

My thoughts exactly, the 488 model line is toast when the replacement comes
out, only true charisma stands the test of time..

Besides, several 488 owners' defensiveness when the car gets criticized further
    evidences the forcing-yourself-to-love-it-for-the-vanity-to-be-seen-in-the-latest syndrome

Congrats Arnie on "forcing-yourself-to-love-it........" Must have been very difficult to make yourself fall in love with such a magnificent machine :))

Don't you mean defensive 458 owners? You alone have made more posts bagging the 488 than any owner has "defending" it.

    Pot meet kettle... Hahaha

I always thought "the south coast" was more progressive but some folks are stuck in circa 2010 which is OK. I have an old iPhone 3 I'm happy you give you to pair with your car. I hear it sounds a lot better than the 6 or the upcoming 7.

It seems no matter how benign a query, as in mine just seeking information, so many threads degenerate down to what is happening all over the world, i.e. whatever you believe has to be wrong. We are all very fortunate to have the time and means to debate cars. Best

    LMAO!

Robert you had to know this type of response to your post was coming, unfortunately.

But I appreciate the passion on both sides. There's no wrong or right answer. You have to drive the 488 and decide.

I saw a lot of super cars in Tokyo this week and the only one that got my hair raised up was an insane sounding ferrari that went by at normal speeds...what an epic sound!

Oh, it was "just" a 458 coupe. 2010-11 model as you could hear the original exhaust.

I wasn't calling out his opinion, I was calling out the irony of his statement. Carlo has probably made more -ve posts on the 488's sound than +ve comments of every other owner combined.

You have to understand someone who spent 30-50k tricking out his $300k car only to find it worth $200k a couple years later is Certainly going to feel defensive about his model, especially when modifications resale are 10cents on the dollar or less. I think 720 had it right when he mentioned an "ugly baby"? Even ugly babies make Lots of noise which is what some owners are all about?

Perhaps, but doubtful most of us in the ferrari owners camp would waste time unnecessarily. More plausible is the expression of well founded belief.

Or I could just say child please.

Saw 458 and 488 again today including speciale all lined up. Took a damn good look keeping an open mind. I think the look of Speciale definitely holds its age better than 458 but 458 alongside 488 is dating and looks a bit soft around the edges....still a nice looking car though. I can see now why there are quite a few 458's on the market for sale here now as many have driven 488 and are in a position to move on and up.
Drive wise there is no question the 488 drives a ton better than 458 in every way. It's just so much more drive-able and enjoyable as a car. Most of the persistent negative comments coming from a few of the 458 owners here can't possibly have driven 488 or, they have and are just really sore about the obvious improvements everywhere. It'd have to be a bitter pill to swallow especially if you only recently bought a 458 - and my only advice there for any 458 owner not ready to pony up is to steer clear of driving 488 or it's gonna hurt. And, using "noise" as an excuse to stay put isn't going to be enough to dull the pain.

    Child Please Shadow.

Noise isn't an excuse. It's a major part of the love affair.

Google Steve Sutcliffe 488 review and watch the video.

And note what he says about the huge positives of the 488, which we all agree, and also his huge problem with the 488, which enthusiasts agree with also.

Steve nails it. And he loves the 488!

Well, your entitled to that opinion, as are all of the others that have moved to the 488. I don't remember reading anything from 458 owner's that question the 488's performance, it's recognized and applauded. They just feel strongly that they still prefer the NA experience, and wouldn't move to the 488 for that reason. I still think it's funny that both sides continue to argue in favor of their ownership. As has been said many, many times, these are really Two different cars, so own what you like, discuss it on the Forum, and have fun with the car, but the 488 owner's (like yourself) that continually post comments attributing "pain", and disappointment, and "bitter pill to swallow" comments accomplish nothing, are childish (IMO) and cause more defensive posts from the other side. Your implied comment that somehow money is involved ("pony up") is frankly insulting (to me, can't speak for others).

Disclosure, I've seen the 488, have now driven the 488, ordered a 488, but still love and appreciate my 458 and just my opinion, but I didn't feel it was a "ton better in every way." When I finally drove it I was expecting the eye opening experience described in these threads, but it didn't happen (for me).

    Jim
