HOCKENHEIM, Germany -- In an attempt to avoid debates over whether drivers are speeding under yellow flags in qualifying, FIA race director Charlie Whiting will now red flag sessions rather than showing double-waved yellows.

I'm not sure about this new system - it seems like a drastic over-reaction to the criticism the FIA received for not properly and consistently enforcing the requirements for cars to slow down and be ready to stop when double yellows are displayed.

Why not just use the virtual safety car system for the track segment where double yellows are displayed, as for Alonso in Hungary, to ensure cars slow down enough in that section? To red flag and abort the session for the entire track causes huge delays to Q, or will mean that if used many drivers will not get in a subsequent lap. If a double yellow situation can be cleared quickly, again a la Alonso, then a driver could continue straight into another lap.

I think Charlie has demonstrated again that he's lost it.

    +1

So lets say we get 2 spins. That means 2 red flags. Red flag only ends after all cars are in the pit. Tires went through heat cycle, time lost, restart session, another out lap...

Christ Charlie. He's completely and utterly lost the plot.

    Also, worryingly...

Q3, Be first to set a time, and spin immediately. Rest has to go back in.

Repeat process after restart. Win pole.

It's all down to the general lack of consistency, whether it's enforcing yellow flags, track limits, driver errors, double movement while defending positions, forcing another driver off track, radio messages etc....

It's a case of "damn if you do, damn if you don't"

Bernie said that F1 should be run by a dictator, and he may be right.

Being an F1 fan is bordering on masochism at this point, and Bernie seems reasonable compared to Charlie Whiting.
