Went for a cruise today and for some reason, the 308 won't go into reverse. Press down and go to reverse position and the car seems to be in 2nd gear. Shifter problems I think......any advice??? Thanks, John

Likely a silentbloc bushing in the shift linkage needs replacing. Also could be motor mounts.

Thank You! I've looked at a diagram and can see that this could be my problem. I'll check the rear one first. Again THANK YOU! Love this site! J

Your selector forks in the gear box have slipped.......no big deal to adjust but it's a spooky feeling when it happens!!

Pick a gear and take it in.....

This also, did not see Tim's post before I wrote mine...motor mounts wearing out can drop the engine and change the geometry of the linkage.

If you replace one silent block, Do Both.

Be prepared to screw up the tyranny (I did; it's EASY) and have to remove the pan to realign everything. It's no real big deal. Just a PITA.

IF you have to do that, change out the shift shaft seals too. That means removing the oil pan. Another PITA and again, not 'hard.' READ the threads.

Remove and clean the shift lever while you are there. The dinosaur bones and petrified Coca Cola are probably further impeding smooth shifting.

Then, other than the motor mounts aging and saging further, you have a new shift shaft system good for another 20+ years.
